They find a slightly interesting heap of rocks in a field somewhere. To "protect" it (Mow the grass twice a year) they fence it off and install a little hut for somebody to take your money from and to sell loads of tourist crap from. They install toilets and a car park and loads of information boards. They then start charging £4.50 for you to see the slightly interesting heap of rocks. You think it's going to be fascinating because it costs £4.50 but realise too late that it's just a slightly interesting heap of rocks that really just needs one notice board and a mow twice a year costing 10 pence but has £4.40 worth of unnecessary amenities and security to make sure you don't avoid paying £4.50 for a 5 minute look!

Bastards.

I don't like people who re-enact stuff. They're only doing it for attention so I make a point of ignoring any passing bowyers, coopers or wenches I see.
I'm a keen gardener so I prefer the Trust with their houses and gardens. I'm also a keen walker so get my fair share of ancient ruins and because they're in the middle of nowhere EH isn't cashing in on them so they're free.
I'm in awe of Silbury hill every time I pass. The whole Avebury area is well cool.

I can't bear Civil War re-enactments - Sealed Knot stuff but the EH stuff was all by people who were very knowledgeable in their field.

I also love Avebury - used to go there quite a bit, but haven't done since having children. Must get up there again soon.

I like visiting our local NT houses & gardens, but the children aren't so keen, which is why we've tended to prefer EH now - lots of open spaces for them to run around in, without worrying they're going to trample on the flower beds [bublush].

Yes, another thumbs up here for Avebury and Silbury hill.
