Was on the canals this weekend (we have a small canal boat). Lots of holiday makers on hire craft, with their dc.

All the holidaymakers happy, kids having a great time learning how to do the locks. Yes, it took them a bit longer to do the locks, but so what. All the children happy, eager to learn, asking questions etc.

Canals supposed to be slow way of travelling.

So why all the moaning faces from middle aged (and I am middle aged) people who could not wait an extra 5 mins at the locks? Don't they like the sight of children enjoying themselves?

AIBU to hope the moaners spring a leak!!!

Do you find that some people (not you OP) who own boats and do it all week/ month/ year resent holidaymakers who aren't the expert like them?
Non experts shouldn't be able to join in. Bit of a canal clique maybe?

MrsKittyFane · 08/04/2012 17:11

People forget that once upon a time they were learning the ropes too.

overmydeadbody · 08/04/2012 17:12

MrsKitty I think you'll find that attitude among people of lots of different hobbies, with a divide between the 'experts' and the people just trying it out for a laugh. I doubt it is uniquer to boat people.

overmydeadbody · 08/04/2012 17:13

and yes, I agree, people forget that they too were once beginners.

agedknees · 08/04/2012 17:16

If holidaymakers did not go on the canals they would probably be silted up now. Holidaymakers bring in a lot of cash to waterside pubs etc and keep them open.

Maybe people where just in a rush, but what's the point of being on a canal and going fast?

YABU - they might spring a leak IN the lock, and then you'd be in a pickle, wouldn't you? Wink

Perhaps they're pissed off because they've accidentally gone out during the school holidays?

My parents are out on their boat at the moment - they're a bit past middle-aged, but if they were looking annoyed it might be because of the cold, or perhaps because the bow thruster has gone wrong again. Not because of the kids, they're alway more than happy for other people's kids, or DD when she's about, to do the hard manual labour on the locks!

overmydead I was actually thinking the same as I was typing. Agree it applies to a lot of things.
I love people who want to share their expertise but :( @ those who tut and moan when others 'get in their way.' They think they're so clever
:)
