To refuse to go on days out in the UK anymore ?

Heswall · 08/04/2012 16:39

I have spent half the day mumsnetting from my phone because we have been bored rigid on a "day out" at a local national trust event.
The egg hunt clues were crap or missing, I ended up offering lunch at Frankie and Benny's if we could get the hell out of there and warm up.
I am sick of having to buy tons of layers of warm clothing that get taken off and then lost - if anyone finds an age 11-12 Joules Aire bodywarmer can I have it back please ? - I am sick of paying £60 in petrol and entrance fees for an hours entertainment at best.
For the price of Alton Towers I can fly two people to Spain, I feel I have done every farm, theme park, old house in the half of the country I live in.
AIBU to stay shove the staycation and save up for warm sunny weather and pastures new instead ?

shockers · 09/04/2012 10:42

My pleasure mankyscotslass, and thank you for the flowers Grin.

mankyscotslass · 09/04/2012 10:58

We will do the Loch Lomond West one on June. Smile

We are in the North west of England, and use our NT Membership a lot - we wear lots of layers and waterproof and make use of the treasure maps or kids activities at their site - usually free kids trails/nature trails, and reward the kids with a play in the play parks at the end. The new Crowwood one in Lyme Park is excellent.

It is nicer if the weather is good - two weeks ago we had a lovely day at Lyme Park, but even if damp weather is can be good.

We always take a picnic and eat in the car if we have to.

naughtymummy · 09/04/2012 11:19

An interesting story wcomes to me. When I was a student I had a.great job babysitting in the smart hotels.of the westend for usually rich americans. I grew up in London , so money was not object I used my local knowledge and did all sorts of fantastically expensi things with them. No soggy picnics we always.ate.out or called room service, I also often had use of a car and driver. Without fail what the kids enjoyed most was larking around in the hotels pool (with a 50p football I bought with me) or kicking the same football round the nearest park with me.......just saying

Tipping today. My ds is 17 and on days like this if we are all home we still like a cinema day. We close curtains make popcorn and get all the duvets down and watch a film with candles etc. When he was little we used to really go to town and make tickets and dp would sell us the sweets Grin costs nothing virtually

E320 · 09/04/2012 11:29

Not exactly days out, but for our first wedding anniversary (some years ago) we thought it would be nice to visit my parents, then drive up from Devon to Scotland over a few days and spend out anniversary at the hotel where we had our reception. As I had a DSS there were 3 of us, plus we didn't live in the UK.
So I started planning and budgeting. I did a very modest budget, cheap flights, b&bs en route, meals out without wine etc. but nearly dropped dead when I saw the total. I then took that sum and looked for last minute holidays abroad.
We ended up with 2 weeks all-inclusive in St. Lucia for the 3 of us.
Wasn't much of a contest, to be honest.

fuzzpig · 09/04/2012 11:34

I'm saving some cereal packets as there are some bowling offers on Crunchy Nut Cornflakes ATM. :)

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 09/04/2012 11:37

Cinema day sounds nice in theory but can absolutely guarantee there is no film all four of us would want to see. I just can't sit still long enough to watch a film during the day, need to be doing stuff and DS is the same.

shockers · 09/04/2012 11:38

Oooh... we're in the NW too... we could save even further and share Wink. We're near Lancaster and there are three quite close by. Now the rain has stopped, I think we're going to go for the Glasson Dock one today.

(I used to go out with a chap who's parents' house backed onto Lyme Park. Woke up one Christmas morning to a snow covered park with a magnificent stag at the bottom of the garden... fab!)

CurrySpice · 09/04/2012 11:40

I think you simply cannot beat this country for holidays and days out BUT the weather is so shit unpredictable.

I don't like being cold, I don't like being wet. Call me a wimp if you like but it's just not my idea of fun.

So no, Yanbu

fuzzpig · 09/04/2012 11:45

I haven't been to the cinema since Harry Potter 6! DCs (4 and 2) have never been.

Can't say I miss it. I feel too restricted sitting in the same place. Though I may start taking DD to the Saturday club now and again - £1 each for a movie that has been out for a while.

I am lucky enough to get free DVD rentals with my job, so I'm catching up with films now. This week I've seen Hugo, Puss in Boots and Tintin.

GrimmaTheNome · 09/04/2012 11:49

I've lost the plot - three what close by? (I'm in that area to - go to Glasson quite often for the cycle along the Lune estuary. But I can't think of anything glasson has that there are 2 more of nearby ConfusedGrin)

jumpyjan · 09/04/2012 11:53

I love days out. We live in west country with access to 2 NT properties. We go for annual membership so its paid in advance and most of our days out I would say we dont spend a penny. We take a picnic in an insulated back pack thingy and load car up with waterproofs/wellies/suncream if we are lucky Smile.

We tend to go to outside places rather than attractions though such as forests/beaches etc as I hate queing and being in crowds.

mankyscotslass · 09/04/2012 11:56

shockers you are further north and west than me.

I live near what they say is the wettest city in England - but I don't think it is that bad.

Or maybe I'm just used to the weather in Scotland where I grew up. Confused Grin

shockers · 09/04/2012 11:59
Grin
shockers · 09/04/2012 12:02

Sorry to confuse you Grimma, there was a sub-thread about Treasure Trails between myself and mankyscotslass. There's one in Glasson, one in Garstang and one in Lancaster Smile.

shockers · 09/04/2012 12:02

Could have been pubs though...Wink.

NiceHamione · 09/04/2012 12:13

Yabu to write off an entire country because if your poorly planned day out and inability to look after your stuff.

We have a day out most weekends and enjoy every single one. We also holiday in this country every year and always have a fantastic time .

GrimmaTheNome · 09/04/2012 12:34

Shockers - oh, sounds interesting - not come across those before. Is there any age they are particularly suitable for?

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 09/04/2012 12:40

Grimma - they were too advanced for my 5 and 7 year old last summer, it didn't stop us, but they didn't totally get it, needed help reading/interpreting the clues etc. They liked spotting the clues though and ticking them off on the sheet.
