To refuse to go on days out in the UK anymore ?

Heswall · 08/04/2012 16:39

I have spent half the day mumsnetting from my phone because we have been bored rigid on a "day out" at a local national trust event.
The egg hunt clues were crap or missing, I ended up offering lunch at Frankie and Benny's if we could get the hell out of there and warm up.
I am sick of having to buy tons of layers of warm clothing that get taken off and then lost - if anyone finds an age 11-12 Joules Aire bodywarmer can I have it back please ? - I am sick of paying £60 in petrol and entrance fees for an hours entertainment at best.
For the price of Alton Towers I can fly two people to Spain, I feel I have done every farm, theme park, old house in the half of the country I live in.
AIBU to stay shove the staycation and save up for warm sunny weather and pastures new instead ?

YANBU staycations suck IMO

AKMD · 08/04/2012 16:43

YABU ya big miseryguts. I love the NT/Cadbury's Easter egg hunts. 3 years ago in the fog with 10m visibility was the best - try orientating your map based on that :o

Take a rucksack to put layers in. Pack a flask of hot chocolate and a bag of sweets and you're sorted.

Or emigrate. It sounds like you'd be happier living somewhere warm.

mrsnesbit · 08/04/2012 16:44

yanbu, i agree with you.

I got a kids go free voucher for sea life centre, booked my ticket on line as it saved me 25% to be told when i got there that the kids go free ticket wasnt valid with on line bookings!
I had carefully budgeted and thought it was a reasonably priced outing (cost me £15) Ended up costing me nearly £30 for 2 hours in a crap sea life centre.

We much prefer days out that cost nowt, take a packed lunch and niace drinks and poss have a cuppa n cake int cafe. BUT these are always weather permitting, so usually freezing cold and wet!

Save up, go abroad. Thats my advice Smile

Heswall · 08/04/2012 16:46

Cuppa and a cake cost me £27.00 Shock Never again

I have always hated "days out" .
Ditto museums and places where the world and his wife queue for some god awful "childrens" activity.

AKMD · 08/04/2012 16:50

Yikes you lot! I love days out in the UK :(

Salmotrutta · 08/04/2012 16:50

Whaaat? One cuppa an one cake?? Or multiples thereof?

That surely had to be for at least 8 people? Shock

ClaireAll · 08/04/2012 16:50

Misery Guts

suburbophobe · 08/04/2012 16:50

I did this years ago. O.k. my DS is a teen now, but it is so expensive having a day out that by the time you add up 4 or so, you could be lying on a Spanish beach!

Well if you go to NT properties more than a couple of times a year, you'll save £££ with a Family membership.
Lost Clothes is hardly the fault of the place you've been.
Take a picnic and a flask. Expect it to be cold. Go with a positive attitude.
Totally up to you if you refuse to go out, but, over a long holiday, I guess your dcs will be harder work if you keep them cooped up in the house the whiole time.

Salmotrutta · 08/04/2012 16:51

P.S. I do like days out in the UK though.

I love historical stuff.

TeaTeaLotsOfTea · 08/04/2012 16:51

YABU

You don't need to spend obscene amounts of money

ps the train fare would probably cost you less.

It is one of my plans to completely see the whole of the UK and I'm not doing bad so far.

There are too many fabulous things in this country for you and your DC to miss.

Also buy some clothes off eBay. When they cost pittance you don't mind if they get lost do you. Perhaps get your DC to take a back each so they can put their things in it.

Eggsits · 08/04/2012 16:52

I get museum legs - after 5 minutes in some worthy establishment my legs go all heavy and I need to sit down.

I've had them for years.

YANBU

I quite like just staying in.

Heswall · 08/04/2012 16:53

6 people, one of which is less than 2 years old so just had a biscuit. 28 pounds, I asked her to repeat it slowly so I could be sure.

I love going to NT places and I love chocolate but the idea of an organised egg hunt sounds hellish. I think UK days out can be lovely but you need to pick carefully.

AnxiousPanxious · 08/04/2012 16:56

Good grief, I've had some ACE days in the UK. I really hate being cold and miserable so I only go on good days if possible. That rules out most places like Alton Towers, we don't book, just go when we can, and try to keep to free outdoors things.
I do agree about the need for all-weather clothing, it is a massive pain in the arse, but I have those clothes for all other days too so it hardly seems like a problem you'd only have on days out.

To be honest I think the mistake you're making is going to shit places instead of spending the same money going somewhere lovely and rural with a bluebell wood and having a great pub lunch. (I am easily pleased I think).

Gabois · 08/04/2012 16:59

If you are anywhere around London, just had a fantastic day at the Museum of Childhood Bethnal Green. Free entrance, indoors w/heating, egg hunt, puppet bunny-themed story, arts & crafts session as well as all the interactive exhibits. There's a pricey cafe, but they have an eating area where you can sit and eat your own packed lunch. My 5 & 2 yo loved it. Full day cost us the price of the tube fare.

lagoonhaze · 08/04/2012 17:02

Yabu- take a picnic! I live in a very touristy county. Everything is expensive. We take train if possible, picnic on train/beach, find inexpensive things to do!

Gabois that sounds fab.

Kladdkaka · 08/04/2012 17:02

YABU I live in Sweden and am spending the Easter weekend indoors as there's too much snow to go out. I pine for days out in the tropics of England.

JoanaM · 08/04/2012 17:11

but what is there to do in spain? sitting on a beach or by the pool is kind of boring

noddyholder · 08/04/2012 17:14

If you save all that money and put it to school fees you might get an invite from an aristocrat with a villa you can have for the hols for free

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 08/04/2012 17:14

We've just had a lovely day out at a NT Easter egg hunt, took packed lunches and spent £10 on the Easter egg hunt and some ice cream. It wasn't particularly cold, the activities were all well laid out and equipped with the right stuff, the only queue was for face painting.

It doesn't have to cost a fortune, our family membership is £90, so we only have to go to NT places about 4 or 5 times to cover the cost, our DCs love the local one so we go frequently. Having membership means you can just pop in for an hour late in the afternoon, or leave if it turns cold. You don't have to go to the coffee shops. I'd rather have a years worth of days out in the UK than one week abroad.

Heswall · 08/04/2012 17:19

Funny noddy, I was about to suggest if you sent your son to private school he might learn not to give you the finger when you point a camera at him. You must be so proud Hmm
