not to be able to work out what facebook is for?

I did join once, a couple of years ago, but couldn't think of anything to do with it and never went back to the page. Would the page still exist? I've long since lost my log in details. Could it have messages and things building up on it? Should I delete it? How?

I lurve Facebook, as I've got friends scattered all over the place and its a great way to keep in touch, share photos etc. And luckily they actually post interesing witty updates, as opposed to the usual "I just cut my toenails" crap, so we ens up having very funny conversations that everyone in the same circle of friends can pile into. I couldn't imagine life without it (which is a bit scarey)

somewherewest · 07/04/2012 10:15

PS I joined as a student it back in days of yore when you still needed a university email address, so I probably belong to the generation who've had it almost all their adult lives.

You can actually delete your account, I did. But it involved a very complicated, non-transparent, non-intuitive process.

Which I can't remember. Sorry! But it exists if you look hard enough. I think I googled generally rather than asked FB.

It is a tool.

It allows you to do many things.

It is for whatever you choose to use it for.

YABU to think that there is something to work out.

I like facebook i never argue on it i never put my laundy out for all to see ,i keep it light hearted and talk to friends oh and i dont play any of the villes either
, Its twitter i dont understand , It just seems a bit stalkery to me ,

DinahMoHum · 07/04/2012 10:20

i love it

keeps me in touch with loads of friends and family that i wouldnt otherwise be able to. Makes me feel more connected to people. Lets me share photos with family who dont get to see the kids much. Lets me annoy people with my music videos. Lets me get hopelessly beaten at words with friends. Provides a quick way of getting in touch and messaging people

I will never be on Facebook, neither is DW and we have strongly advised our children against it because their future employers will routinely check their Facebook pages. There was an article in the Telegraph saying Half of employers 'reject potential worker after look at Facebook page'.

This is now standard practice amongst employers and in the USA there is a furore over employers demanding prospective employees hand over their Facebook passwords so their full profile can be checked.

A youthful indiscretion at college or uni should not be on your record for ever. Indeed, there are calls to make it mandatory for Google, Facebook and other sites to 'forget' data after a certain time (1 year).

I happen to think that MN should be willing to forget past posts from people too. We all share personal information and often people post on MN in very vulnerable situations. I think it only takes one determined person to stalk or track another poster until they work out who they are and for that person then to be outed in a malicious way - it has happened.

Morebeta - I post nothing on FB that I couldn't share with the rest of the world, it can be used responsibly. Young people I'd be more worried about, had to hide my niece as the language and nonsense on her page was just so silly and embarrassing.

CaptainKirk · 07/04/2012 10:47

Of course, an employer can only reject you from what is on your Facebook page if you're daft enough to have privacy settings that allow anyone to look at your profile.

catgirl1976 · 07/04/2012 11:55

I love Facebook. We are in the digital age. My life is on-line and I like it that way. Most people I know feel the same.

It has all my photos and videos so its full of memories. It is a record of my life.

It keeps me up to date with what is happening to my friends and what is happening in the world.

It allows me to keep up to date with my interests

It has helped my find people I had lost touch with.

It has let me keep in touch with friends and family who live far away

It allows me to play games (although I don't but I could if I wished to)

It sells me stuff (not a positive, but you wanted to know what it is for)

I find it an invlauable tool and I cannot imagine life without it (or at least without a good replacement). A bit like trying to imagine a world with no Google

catgirl1976 · 07/04/2012 11:56

Oh yes - and as an employer I do use it to screen potential employees but it is very rare you can actually do that as most people as savvy enough to sort out their privacy settings.

somewherewest · 07/04/2012 13:11

Morebeta Social networking sites are so much part of life that young people should be taught to use them wisely rather than avoid them altogether (which just isn't going to happen). There's a parallel with alcohol IMO.

FrenchRuby · 07/04/2012 13:35

I like Facebook. I use it to keep in touch with my brother and sister who both live really far away. And I've found a few lost relatives on there.

MoreBeta · 07/04/2012 16:04

Some people do have a 'public' Facebook account under their proper name which they use to provide a sanaitised version of their life with wholesome photos of them climbing Everest etc and which they know employers will look at and then use another account under a nickname which they share with friends.

Mopswerver · 07/04/2012 16:08

It is much misused but can be really useful for:
Keeping up to date with relatives or friends who you no longer live near.
Passing on info e.g we have a Village page.
Having a bit of banter with friends...much like happens in an office.

I go on Twitter to catch up with news events as you can often get the local low-down rather than the News version of events. I don't "Tweet" myself though!
