... should not be showered in my nice, clean en-suite bathroom, but should instead be hosed off and washed outdoors, even though that meant a very cold bath?? Dh was fully intending to bring ddog2 through the house, reeking of rotten, dead seal, through our bedroom, to shower her in our en-suite. [bushock] I said no, and insisted he wash her in the garden, with the garden hose. WIBU?

Ddog2 is in disgrace. [bugrin]

If my OH insists our dog needs to be washed outside for whatever reason (generally to save the house getting dirty) I fill up some buckets with nice warm water so he doesn't have to get cold.

TheLaineyWayIsEssex · 06/04/2012 18:20

Still wondering where one would come across a seal, let alone a dead one

BrianCoxHasScaryEggs · 06/04/2012 18:21

at the beach?

Wink
ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 06/04/2012 18:23

Could he not have carried her into the bathroom?? It's bloody cold out today - brrrrrr

TheLaineyWayIsEssex · 06/04/2012 18:46

Have never been to a beach that has dead seals. I feel deprived

LadyBeagleEyes · 06/04/2012 18:49

I live on the coast in NW Scotland.
I've never seen a dead seal yet.
But I've seen a couple of live ones.

KisMittz · 06/04/2012 18:52

also snorted at 'see this is why I keep goldfish'.

I don't know if YABU SDTG, I think not... but I definitely think your dog IBU. However cute......... Grin

BrianCoxHasScaryEggs · 06/04/2012 18:52

I've seen a dead pup Sad washed up on the rocks at Hoylake on the Wirral.

Used to live on the Isle of Man and would go and watch the seal colony on the Calf of Man - would spend hours with my binoculars, they are such lovely creatures.

EasyToEatTiger · 06/04/2012 18:58

Oh the joys of dogs! One of ours in particular enjoys the stench of fox poo. The same wonder hound got hideously drunk and fell off the bed once. He had eaten a massive bowl of uncooked bread dough.
We wash the dogs outside whatever the weather. They then dry themselves in the house, often in our bed[buhmm]

LadyBeagleEyes · 06/04/2012 19:08

I must admit, when I walk my dog on the shore, I can't keep him out of the water, even when it's freezing.
So a good hose down is fine.
My boy has his own towel and I dry him off as he looks so cold, but dogs are tough.
Well mine is anyway.

LadyBeagleEyes · 06/04/2012 19:11

I love the sound of your drunk dog falling of the bed Easy.
That made me laff.

My dog loves a nice stinking carcase, or some sticky hedgehog poo if she can find it - I hose her off outside too.

Is your dog a bitch OP? (am testing my theory that it is mostly females that roll in whiffy stuff)

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 06/04/2012 19:34

She is a bitch, yes, Beamur.

And I think she still smells - the house honked when dh and I got back in just now. I think we are going to have to try the ketchup next.

Beamur · 06/04/2012 19:38

If a wash doesn't work I have an anti-odour spray I use - a bit like dog Febreze!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 06/04/2012 19:40

I might need dog febreze, Beamur - do you get it at a pet shop?

OP posts:
ceres · 06/04/2012 19:47

jajas - i think it is the vinegar in the ketchup that kills the smell.

Beamur · 06/04/2012 19:49

Can't remember exactly where - one of the big shops, it's quite effective. Dog is not terribly keen on it though! I had some 'groom spray' too but that was just very highly scented and made us all sneeze!

Shoshe · 06/04/2012 20:47

We have two Staffies, bigger one loves to roll in fox poo.

She was spayed on Wednesday, so only allowed out on lead, in her babygrow (instead of a cone to stop her licking) little bugger still managed to roll on the lead! Had to strip her off and wash her nice new babygrow when we got home. She is now modelling a Micky mouse baby vest with poppers Grin

Younger one also rolled this morning (why oh why is it when DH is at work and I have to deal with it!)

So I had to try holding her while I hosed her off. SHE HATES WATER. She got away from me whilst still covered in shampoo, shot in the house, up the stairs (where she is NOT allowed) and under my bed.

Do you think I could get the little bugger?

Could I hell

Left her till she slunk back down. Ha had the kitchen sink ready with water dunked her in it. I will not be beaten.

Oh by the way a tiny amount of lavender oil in the rinse helps the smell.

SeaHouses · 06/04/2012 21:03

My dogs have rolled next to a dead seal, but even they would draw the line at rolling in the seal itself. Is your dog up to date with its jabs? Seals can carry parvovirus.

tyler80 · 06/04/2012 21:15

If we go to my friend's and the OH leaves his bag on the floor her dogs roll on it in much the same manner as they do in fox poo. It's a bit disconcerting, the bag has no obvious smell to us.

Kbear · 06/04/2012 21:19

honestly, goldfish, the way forward, hassle free pet keeping....

Kbear · 06/04/2012 21:20

my kids hate me, obv, because the goldfish aren't as much fun as a dog, but rolling in dead seals ain't my kinda fun

SarahStrattonsEasterName · 06/04/2012 21:25

Urgh no, you have to clean out the fishbowl, full of fish shit. Boaksome.

GrahamTribe · 06/04/2012 21:38

I bath our dog in the family bathroom, though the en suite would do just as well. It's far too cold for the hosepipe outside. Shock More importantly, please try your utmost to ensure that your dog doesn't go near a dead seal again. Recent years have seen a marked increase in the Parvo virus in dead seals, with dogs contracting it as a result of contact on the beach. Even if vaccinated it's still possible for a dog to succumb to Parvo, no vaccine is 100 reliable.
