I left a job I hated last December. Shortly before I left I went on strike with everyone else. I asked my manager at the time to email payroll to let them know and make sure it would be deducted from my final payslip. She did, and I have confirmation they've been notified.
Now, 4 bloody months later they've sent me an invoice for the strike day saying that I was paid and "as I can appreciate they want to recoup the money". I did this deliberately so I didn't get landed with a surprise bill long aftert I had forgotten the hell that was that job.

BTW tho the 100k and 130k were wildly inflated the proportions are about right.
Oh Im being an idiot. Figures were £145.91 gross and £187.22 net. So more net...

Strongly advise looking at this when sober. Although this is hilarious.

StealthPolarBear · 05/04/2012 23:12

married Confused
thank you for at least trying though! Believe it or not I work with numbers.
Explain it in terms of one syllable.
"Because they added the payment gross are deducting the equivalent of the gross x 2 but have quoted the total net deductible figure to you."
Why are they deducting 2 grosses? AFAIK, assuming they are right and I was paid, they paid me for 30 days in Nov. And it should ahve been 29. So only one to be deducted, surely?

Do you think I'm capable of packing for a trip we're going on tomorrow
(DH is driving!)
(Even if he doesn't know it)

OP posts:
Bohica · 05/04/2012 23:17

I have also had Wine

I believe it is because tax & NI would have been paid on the amount you received so it might have been added to the re-coup amount because it wasn't owed to you.

I honestly think you should either ignore this invoice head in the sand or send a letter with the name of HR that confirmed it to you.

I wouldn't chase from payroll end for one day tbh.

marriedinwhite · 05/04/2012 23:17

Our payroll have done in the past what I think yours has. They paid an extra day rather than deducting one for the strike Shock. Now they have realised they paid an extra two days and therefore the marginal tax rate based on your usual monthly pay is is more and it has skewed the net figure.

Bohica · 05/04/2012 23:22

I have just spilled my wine laughing at the massive x post and how long it took me to reply!

Stealth Fuck em, randomly pack for your holiday and don't give them a second thought.

I should have been bowling with work collegues tonight but cba and prefer to MN with wine and talking bollocks all night

StealthPolarBear · 05/04/2012 23:23

But that makes no sense. Why would they pay an extra day when even peoplelike me can see if people are striking you deduct a day.
SO bohica, are you saying they paid the taxman on money they paid me, but are now claiming the tax back from ME??

OP posts:
StealthPolarBear · 05/04/2012 23:28

Oh but then presumably I will have paid too much tax and so will have my code adjusted to pay me back.

OP posts:
StealthPolarBear · 05/04/2012 23:30

and if I've paid too much NI I am happy to accept payment in kind. Maybe I could turn up at my local hospital and demand a small procedure to the correct amunt. Maybe they could turn on the liposuction machine until my £8.62 is all used up. I'd have to do my own dressings no doubt.

OP posts:
Alibabaandthe40nappies · 05/04/2012 23:36

Yes, I think you may have to ring HMRC about your tax to make sure they adjust it properly.

Can I just say, for the love of God do not try to pack now while you are drunk, although it would be funny Grin

learningtofly · 05/04/2012 23:39

Ah its the end of the financial year - some poor buggers spent weeks trying to figure out why the budget doesn't add up!

Bohica · 05/04/2012 23:41

Oh please do pack but only if you promise to post the outcome whilst on holiday!!

Honestly, don't sweat it and have a nice break.

StealthPolarBear · 05/04/2012 23:42

Oh you are jokng. Useless idiots. So they land me with a £200 bill and the fun of trying to explain it all to HMRC AngryAngryAngry

OP posts:
StealthPolarBear · 05/04/2012 23:49

Oh and I'm not quite a think as you all drunk I am. Right so packing. Haribo...16 pairs of pants....does anyone else pack loads of pants when going away in case they have an accidnet despite the fact they haven't had an accidnet since the age of 3?

Re: Overpayment as a result of strike action
I have enclosed a copy of the email where I requested that this payment be deducted from my December 2011 salary. I am not able to find a payslip for December, and so am not able to confirm whether this deduction was applied. As you can appreciate, having ensured that I would not receive a future invoice in respect of the strike action, I am now concerned to have received one four months later, and will struggle to pay this amount in full immediately.
I also do not understand the calculations behind the amount owing. £187.22 seems high as the net payment for one day. As a rough estimate of this being one twentieth of my net monthly salary, that would imply a take home pay of over £3700, which was not the case.
Please could you contact me to clarify these issues.
Yours sincerely
With love and cuddles
Stealthy

stealth

Strike deductions are usually based on dividing the gross salary by 260ths if that helps.

I might just add something like:

I am able to confirm that I was on strike on 30th November 2011 but shall be grateful if you will please confirm if an audit trail was kept to evidence this. Furthermore I shall be very grateful if you will confirm how you have arrived at the sum of £187.22 and provide a copy payslip for December for my records.

I am unable to pay this sum immediately because I made my best endeavours to ensure it was deducted from my final leaving salary but this did not happen.

When you have provided the information requested I will be in a position to propose a repayment schedule but note my disappointment that this matter was not satisfactorily resolved before my last day of service and that it has only now come to light.

Best wishes.

StealthPolarBear · 10/04/2012 17:45

thanks, will work some of that in.
I'll calculate that, but why gross salary?? Or does that come back to them clawing tax, NI, pension back from me??

OP posts:
StealthPolarBear · 10/04/2012 17:46

gross/260 comes to £146.
So this figure could well be net x 2
Which is bloody ridiculous

OP posts:
marriedinwhite · 10/04/2012 17:47

Because you start with the gross and work from there. The deduction is made on the gross because it might have an impact where employees cross the tax thresholds and the gross is what the employer pays and that is what he/she is interested it and will also include the pension contribution if any.
