Felt totally humiliated at docs, to fat to go on the pill :(

Not any pill, used to take the one that helped with acne but it has a increased risk of dvt.

Went today to go back on pill and was told I was to fat to go on the pill I need. She never even took my blood pressure or weighed me so that shows just how truly huge I am that I was refused on appearance alone :(

Am so ashamed, have been dieting for the last two weeks and have lost 1/2 stone. Hoping this feeling of total humiliation sticks with me to push me on to lose more.

Was so awkward, dr just kept staring at the floor while I basically begged for the pill as my acne is horrendous at the moment.

Left the surgery with nothing for my skin and no contraception either (duh)

Am so ashamed I can't even tell dh so am offloading here.

What a day!

Oh bless you, horrible isn't it.

I'm sure you're not unhealthy with it but it makes you feel crap

BlackOutTheSun · 05/04/2012 18:29

Sad can't believe she refused point blank

didn't she offer you anything?

mad4 · 05/04/2012 18:31

no advice, but lots of sympathy.
sounds like your doctor is either horrid or was having a truely bad day.

like you say, a horrid experience, but hold this in your mind to spur you on to lose weight (although half a stone in 2 weeks is pretty impressive imho)

chin up.

fudgywudgy · 05/04/2012 18:32

Was only offered things I have tried before that did not work for me.

I now have to go to the fpc to see if they will prescribe it to me, even more humiliation. Can't wait Hmm

In the nicest possible way, maybe it is what you need to get yourself to a healthy weight.

Would you really have preferred to vastly increase your risk of dying in order for your face to look better?

The doctor had your best interests at heart!

Sorry if this sounds harsh but your perspective is skewed.

Northernlurker · 05/04/2012 18:33

Well that's ridiculous - there's a good chance being pregnant at your weight would be more dangerous than taking the pill!

Ok - so you need your skin sorted out and you need some contraception. What about going to a family planning clinic for the latter at least? Was the pill you wanted a combined one? The mini pill might be a better option but you mightbe advised to take two per day instead on one. Having said that I am a short size 22 and took one pill a day for ten years without any issue. The other option might be a copper coil if something like a Mirena is contra-indicated too.

HolofernesesHead · 05/04/2012 18:33

Half a stone in a fortnight is brilliant! Try to channel how you're feeing now to spur yourself on. Your GP sounds a bt rubbish, tbh (unless s/he was saying this to try and spur you on to lose weight?...)

Dustinthewind · 05/04/2012 18:34

Can you make another appointment with a different doctor at the same practice and ask what alternatives there are to help you?

fudgywudgy · 05/04/2012 18:34

Mad4 it's only come off so quick as I have so much to lose.

OP posts:
Lizcat · 05/04/2012 18:34

Sorry you had a horrid experience, but does the risk of DVT not hugely increase with this pill if you are overweight? As far as I remember it does and if your GP had given it to you and then you had had DVT they would have been negligent.

Sparklingbunnyears · 05/04/2012 18:34

It sounds like you are already doing really well. Don't lose heart, carry on with the weight loss.

Tell your DH. He needs to know that you are upset.

Chilenachica · 05/04/2012 18:35

Well done on your weight loss. Is there not anything else that could help with the acne, don't some people get prescribed an antibiotic?

Hope you start to feel better

Northernlurker · 05/04/2012 18:36

And for the acne - don't antibiotics help some types? Has that been tried? You could request a hospital referral to a dermatologist if you can't be treated by the GP.

I think it wasn't helpful of your doctor to refuse you without looking at your BMI and BP. You've no information at all from her about what is needed for your health, just a feeling of humilation. Now some people appear to feel that's all overweight people deserve. They are wrong.

Try the FPC, keep up with your great weight loss and don't despair Smile

Sparklingbunnyears · 05/04/2012 18:36

Is there another GP you could go and see?

fudgywudgy · 05/04/2012 18:36

I totally agree with you lazyday.

I was totally humiliated and I'm hoping this does push me to lose.

Was still totally shit though, always thought because I was tall I "carried" it better and did not look as heavy as I was.

I now know better!

Northernlurker · 05/04/2012 18:38

Something else that will help your general well being is exercise. Can you do much at the moment? Swimming is very good if it's your thing or cycling. I love cycling and it's the right time of year for it Smile This will help your BP and blood sugar too as well as weight loss but best of all you'll get some natural endorphins from it (a natural 'high') which will improve your feelings of well being.

Bunbaker · 05/04/2012 18:38

I imagine the doctor didn't want to prescribe anything that might increase your risk of a DVT or worse. Because we live in a litigious society these days I expect the doctor was also afraid of being sued for giving you medication that would increase health risks.

Well done for losing the weight so far, please don't lose heart. This time next year you will be slim with clear, healthy looking skin.

fudgywudgy · 05/04/2012 18:39

I'm on antibiotics at the moment, have been for the last year and they do nothing for me.

Have tried loads over the years and this is really the only thing that did make a difference.

OP posts:
fudgywudgy · 05/04/2012 18:41

I walk 2 miles a day and swim 4 times a week.

Unfortunatly I also have the appetite of a horse!

ThatGhastlyWoman · 05/04/2012 18:44

Well done for losing so much weight. Just a wee question: do you know what the cause of the spots is? I was on Dianette for polycistic ovaries, which gave me spots. (I also got refused them after I told the doc I'd had migraines.)

Anyway, spots and weight gain can be related to PCOS, so may be something to check out? Doesn't sound like your GP handled it very well, though. :(

pingu2209 · 05/04/2012 18:44

Ahhhh this happened to me. After my 2nd child, at my 6 week check, the doctor told me I was too overweight to go on the pill. She didn't weigh me either - just took one look at me and said I was 'obese' so couldn't go back on the pill.

A year later my daughter was born!!

fudgywudgy · 05/04/2012 18:48

I don't think I have pcos, I have normal regular periods and fall pg easily.

I just lost a baby at nearly 4 months at Xmas and I was this weight when I fell pg until I lost the baby and it was not mentioned as bring a issue at that point.

OP posts:
MrsCampbellBlack · 05/04/2012 18:48

I think Drs are much stricter now about prescribing the pill. I'm only allowed the mini-pill because I'm over 35 where as a few years ago I would have been given the combined pill.

So I wouldn't take it too personally.

LadyLeaf · 05/04/2012 18:50

This makes me so angry! You must change doctors for one more human. Don't stand for that kind of discriminatory treatment, GP's are supposed to work for you not against you. I had an awful GP who did nothing to help resolve a painful and re-occurent condition for four years. I changed doctors and the issue was sorted in a month :) You've done so well, keep at it and find a GP who actually cares about their patients.
