To think it's naff to have just vouchers on your wedding gift list?

A friend is remarrying to a lovely lady I've met once so far. We received an invitation with a lovely message that they really just want our company but if we so wish there is a gift list with a well known department store.

I got a bit excited thinking I could get them something they really want. Open the list and the only item in there is....gift vouchers!

Is it me?

I dont get this I didnt even have a wedding list and didnt have any presents at all. However I totally dont care if people ask for money and vouchers surely its better to get something they will use. Its not 1970 with lists of Lladro and tea sets. They can get what they want then and its better as it wouldnt end up not getting used.

Totally naff.

YANBU.

Gift lists shouldn't be included with invitations - wait until people ask, so it doesn't come across as an expectation or reciprocal "payment" for attending.

Asking for vouchers is effectively the same as asking for money. And if people wanted to give money, they'd do so without asking for a list. If people ask for a list they would like ideas of items they can choose from and perhaps be remembered for.

YABU, as someone else says the department stores will usually 'top up' the voucher so there's a bit extra.

I have no problem with gift lists, asking for vouchers, cash, holiday tokens... It makes everything so much easier and you can always ignore the suggestions and get something else anyway. The problem comes when there's an unrealistic minimum spend.

When DH and I got married we were going to be living together for the first time and so we had a gift list at Debenhams with everything from measuring spoons at £2.50 to bedding sets at £40. We wouldn't have dreamed of putting anything more expensive on there and stuck to the basics ranges for most things.

I have no difficulties with vouchers either if it is what they want. DH and I married young and were quite happy with our student days crockery and pans and we had a list of camping things that people could ask for if they wanted to. Was a bit taken aback at the number of relatives who insisted that I must have silver cake forks instead. So if they want vouchers they can have vouchers. Just don't get the gift list in that case, except the getting extra, that makes some kind of sense.

YABU!

We asked for vouchers for our wedding and received roughly £2000 to spend at a department store.

The day we spend those vouchers was better then the wedding dayGrin

Sparklingbunnyears · 05/04/2012 21:03

Did you need 2k worth of stuff from a department store though Moon? That's an awful lot of vouchers.

madmouse · 05/04/2012 21:07

I feel grossly misunderstood here Grin

It's not about the vouchers

It's about having a department store list, with pin code and everything, containing 1 item - vouchers

On the face of it, it is mental. When you realise that the department store adds 10% or £50 or whatever it is then it makes perfect sense.

Dh and I had lived together for 7 years before getting married and we specifically requested no presents.
I'll give you naff though - a friend of Dh's included his account number and sort code on the invite asking for cash to be paid directly into his account Shock

moonblushtomato · 05/04/2012 21:15

Sparklingbunnyears when we got hitched we both had our own places therefore own toasters, towels etc so thought it would be nice to get some "posher" stuff.

For example, a Denby dinner service, Le Creuset pots, a canteen of posh cutlery...God I wished we'd spent it all on clothes!!!!

StealthPolarBear · 05/04/2012 21:15

have trhey populted it yet? I remember seeing vouchers on our (JL) list and being surprised as I hadn't added them - btu they put them on automatically.
So if they've registered for the list but not been round with the scanny thing, they may only have vouchers on the list
