How difficult can it be?

COllect water in a water but or bucket for the garden, use left over dishwashing water, or even water from the bath for watering the garden.

Bathwater or a bucket of water for the car.

Yes, it's a bit more hassle, but there is a hosepipe ban. In april. For a reason.

I think those people who are saying 'well, I don't see why I shouldn't use it' are no better than people who chuck rubbish out of their cars because they don't see why they should take it home with them.

Isn't it a bit early to get on your high horse about this? It only came in today!

I'm all for a high horse but this one might be a bit early to the party.

quick question can I still use a hose pipe to clean out my chickens if we have a ban (no idea if we do or not) this is the only thing I use it for, once a week.

B52s · 05/04/2012 12:54

£410pa is just over £1.12 a day. Which isn't bad for the service. And people on meters pay for what they use, no more, no less. People without meters may be paying more than they need to and subsidising others.

I think the ban is more about encouraging the public to save water than trying to catch people out.

And who exactly will nail all the water companies for wasting water through the unrepaired leaks?? There is a lot more water wasted this way than ever goes to maintain lawns and gardens.

Tee2072 · 05/04/2012 13:01

We don't have a hosepipe ban, a car or water charges.

Everyone should relocate to Northern Ireland.

TheRhubarb · 05/04/2012 13:04

Well I wonder how I would get on if I reported every leak to the water company and insisted they fine themselves?

B52s I don't begrudge paying for clean water but I begrudge paying so that the water companies can line their pockets with £3bn in profit.

oohlordylordy · 05/04/2012 13:07

Margoandjerry - we have a hosepipe ban in effect today.

3 people who are close to me (neighbour, gardener and friend) have all said they absolutely intend to ignore it.

Reasons:
Neighbour: No one will see me
Gardener: Will make my job more difficult
Friend: Who's going to stop me

All pathetic excuses.

ALL will be wailing if it did ever come to water rationing.

I have spent a fortune on mulch and broken my back shovelling it, in order to help my garden as much as possible. I love my plants and feel it is far better for the environment for me to have one of the few remaining front gardens in the area that has real live plants and trees in, instead of having turned it into a concrete carparking space. Easy for those who've concreted, paved or decked their gardens to not care about the hosepipe ban and criticise those watering plants, but if we had more gardens and green spaces in our cities, more rainwater would filter back into the groundwater instead of washing straight down the storm drains and being lost to sea.

I won't break the ban. But it does annoy me that at seven months pregnant and with a bad back I shall have to waddle to and fro with a heavy watering can, while Thames Water merrily allows an Olympic sized swimming pool worth of water to leak away every five minutes.
