Confused about hosepipe ban

What exactly, in terms of water use, is the difference between hosing filthy dogs down in the garden or having to do it inside in the bath (which presumably wouldn't qualify me for a fine)? Confused

On our water company website you aren't allowed to water gardens, fill pools/paddling pools or wash cars, boats or windows. There was no mention of washing dogs so you might be ok!

HappyHoppyChick · 05/04/2012 09:23

I meant according to our water company website. No-one is likely to be washing boats on the actual website! Blush

D0oinMeCleanin · 05/04/2012 09:24

I don't understand why places that have lots of water can't transport some to places that don't?

It rained solidly here for almost 24 hours on Tuesday. This is normal. We have plenty of water. We'd be willing to share it in return for a bit of sun Grin

MrFunnytheEasterBunny · 05/04/2012 09:24

Don't know, but I also don't understand why blue badge holders are exempt (and for the record, my mother has a blue badge!)

Paiviaso · 05/04/2012 09:25

You have to draw the line somewhere, even though it wont completely change the water being used.

And as HappyHoppyChick said, you may actually be able to wash your dogs with the hosepipe, check with water company.

Kladdkaka · 05/04/2012 09:26

Don't know, but I also don't understand why blue badge holders are exempt (and for the record, my mother has a blue badge!)

Possibly because carrying multiple buckets of water backwards and forwards is not an option for them.

Firawla · 05/04/2012 09:26

I don't understand it either, so is it just hose pipes banned - if i was to do those activities like fill a paddling pool by pouring water in with a different method, will it be allowed?

boschy · 05/04/2012 09:33

I dont really get it either... our water company says its ok to use a hose to wash down animals or clean animal housing, but its not ok to water vegetable crops using a hose. I suppose there is the risk of people wandering off and leaving the hose running if you are watering plants....

MurielTheActor · 05/04/2012 09:33

It is all very unclear.
Oh and even though we are in the hosepipe ban area and our water supplier is one of the companies enforcing it - we have had no literature of any kind to tell us about it or what or not what to do.
really really Confused

crashdoll · 05/04/2012 09:35

What I don't get is why blue badge holders and not those in receipt of DLA? It isn't relevant to me as I don't garden but I could not lift buckets of water.

MrFunnytheEasterBunny · 05/04/2012 09:36

kladakka hadnt thought about that - my mum has my dad to do that for her, so it didn't occur to me, but other people may well not have!

CasperGutman · 05/04/2012 09:36

The details of what is or isn't allowed depend on the specific rules for each water company. You should be able to find them with a bit of googling, but for my water company the rules are here: www.thameswater.co.uk/cps/rde/xchg/corp/hs.xsl/15443.htm

Most things on the list are only prohibited "using a hosepipe", so you can (for example) water your garden with a watering can or wash your car with a bucket.

Firawla: your example of filling a paddling pool is different as they list "filling or maintaining a domestic swimming or paddling pool" as prohibited without limiting this to "using a hoespipe".

MrFunnytheEasterBunny · 05/04/2012 09:37

crashdoll more people have blue badges than dla, my mum had a blue badge for 3 yrs before she got dla, and if you become unfit when you are over 65 you can't get dla so old and unfit people would be excluded.

AfricanExport · 05/04/2012 09:37

What I don't get is that there are more water shortages/hosepipe bans in England than in South Africa Confused.

Build some reservoirs and fix the pipes... simples

crashdoll · 05/04/2012 09:43

I should have included Attendance Allowance when I said DLA but I get your point. For some reason, I would have thought more people received DLA than BBs.

MrFunnytheEasterBunny · 05/04/2012 09:45

I think it's easier to fit the criteria for a blue badge than dla Confused silly though, the two should go hand in hand really!

MurielTheActor · 05/04/2012 09:47

On water company website Hot Tubs are not included in ban Grin Hmm

OP posts:
Kladdkaka · 05/04/2012 09:47

I've had a BB forever. I've never had any other disability benefit as I've never bothered to apply. Perhaps there are lots of others like me.

MrFunnytheEasterBunny · 05/04/2012 09:50

kladdkaka I would say so, my mum applied for a blue badge when she couldn't make it from the car to the hospital from the other end of the car park and almost collapsed, she didn't have the incentive to apply for dla until she was retired on ill health grounds last month aged 56 and still paying the mortgage!!!

MrFunnytheEasterBunny · 05/04/2012 09:51

Posted too soon, what I was going to add, is that there is a more immediate and tangible need for a blue badge than dla for a lot of people with disabilities. Plus there are lots like my mum who think they are "not bad enough" to get dla and then go on to get higher rate for both

Kladdkaka · 05/04/2012 09:59

That's like me. I'm autistic and also have physical difficulties. I haven't worked for nearly 10 years. I just sponge off my husband instead. :o

Who hoses their lawns this time of year? Confused

BiddyPop · 05/04/2012 10:08

So, would it be ok to wash the dogs, using a hosepipe, standing in a paddling pool and then empty that water over the veggies growing in the garden? Or is that being really subversive?! Wink

(No hosepipe bans here, now or in recent years, so haven't a clue how this all works...Confused)

hazeyjane · 05/04/2012 10:15

dh is a sports groundsman working on his cricket grounds at the moment - his job at the moment is water, roll, water, roll ad infinitum - needless to say he is a bit fucked!

CogitoErgoSometimes · 05/04/2012 11:02

"Who hoses their lawns this time of year? "

Who hoses their lawn any time of year? They go yellow, it eventually rains and they turn green. Watering them is a waste of time. BTW.... difference between dog in the bath and dog with a hosepipe is that you will run the taps for a bath for 2 minutes and spend 10 minutes washing the dog. Run a hosepipe for 10 minutes and that's 5x the amount that went into the bath.
