to expect my cat to sleep in his bed

or on the nice warm settee, or upstairs on my bed or one of the spare beds, or in the airing cupboard or on the clean dry towel I lovingly fold up for him a and place on his favourite patch under my bed, or on the hammock I hang from the radiator for him, rather than repeatedly digging round in the bin for yesterdays torn, greasy pizza box and sleeping on that?

Ours never sleep in their beds, they prefer to sleep on newspaper - preferably when someone is trying to read it Smile. My boy cat has also been eyeing up the puppy's crate lately, despite loathing puppy Confused

Bartiimaeus · 05/04/2012 09:04

My cat's favourite sleeping spot was on the stairs. Only to protest in disgust when trodden on in the dark. Every morning Hmm

Also on the back of the sofa (fell off many times) or on a piece of paper. Any piece on paper. She would squish herself up very tightly so all on her was on the paper and nothing was touching the carpet.

Some of these posts are resonating with me! Cat has a 'lare' in the bottom of a bookcase and DD is not allowed near it...... She will receive feline entertainment only when he decrees it reasonable.

Kladdkaka · 05/04/2012 09:22

Give him the greasy pizza box to sleep in. Then he won't want it. Cats are contrary like that.

IAmBooyhoo · 05/04/2012 10:27

do any of your cats insist that they must sit on the bathroom windowsill (inside) at the exact moment you have lathered up in the shower? he just sits there, watching me, knowing i can't stand the cold long enough to jump out and chase him away.

crazynanna · 05/04/2012 10:37

crazykitten's favourite is a carrier bag to sleep in/on. And has to be the blue ones' from the corner shop...he positivly scowls at supermarket ones' Wink

NowWeKnow · 05/04/2012 10:46

I have an old pink hessian shopping bag and we have to keep it in the middle of the living room. It looks awful but their lordships like to sleep in it, on it, under it and scratch it and they look enraged if I move it.

bettybat · 05/04/2012 10:56

My cat does deign to use the bed I lovingly made for her from her carrier with an old pillow on top and covered in a sheepskin rug. But only because it's in a corner at the top of the stairs, and she can observe all the comings and goings in a haughty, superior manner.

But she also has a hundred other sleeping places in our little flat. I don't even know if you can call their odd, contrary sleeping places odd because cats - all cats - are odd and contrary. So that makes them not odd, right?

But my cat is also pretty possessive of me too. She has no qualms about staring at me jealously for hours with a look of intense accusation and blame, waking me up in the dead of night by sitting on my head but creeping around like DH like a child "that mustn't wake Daddy!", leaping out and attacking me but never DH, and yet leaping into my arms, paws around my neck, face buried in my hair, for a cuddle when she's frightened - with DH getting the regular cat kind of holding.

oreocrumbs · 05/04/2012 11:18

Booyhoo my cat doesn't watch me in the shower but he has to sit on my knee when I go to the loo Hmm.

I had a cat years ago that uses to sit on the side of the bath when I was in it. She luffed me big time though, she was my shaddow and used to go everywhere with me. If I went to my DM's for a cuppa she would come with me in the car and sit perfectly still on my knee while I drove probably illegal.

Current cat is a voyeur, and if he doesn't get locked out of the bedroom at "private" times he sits on the chest of drawers silently staring untill he decides to start yowling a critique of our actions. (At which point DP evicts him). Confused

IAmBooyhoo · 05/04/2012 11:24

oh yes R (for runner) attempted to sit on my knee once when i sat down to pee. just the once mind, i jumped up pretty sharpish, it was almost messy. Blush Grin

r sits on the edge of the bath too and pokes the water. i dont mind that because he lies down on teh edge and looks teh other way. it's the staring while i'm in teh shower that freaks me out.

i'm single so i have no issues with 'private' times but they definitely wouldn't get a chance to critique if it ever happened. Grin

aJumpedUpPantryBoy · 05/04/2012 11:30

One of mine has decided that his current bed is a carrier bag in the spare room. He has the choice of several baskets, a radiator bed, my bed, settees etc but he keeps returning to an Asda carrier bag - if I dare to move it he sits in the spare room and screeches angrily.

mrsbugsywugsy · 05/04/2012 12:19

oreocrumbs ours is a voyeur too! She will sit on the end of the end of the bed, looking disgusted. I wonder what is going through her mind?

Mrsjay · 05/04/2012 12:22

my cat used to jump in the tumble dryer and sleep there till it cooled down wouldve been a disaster if i didnt notice Grin she used to also try and sleep on the hob , I dont think you can choose where a cat sleeps infact i dont think you can make a cat do anything Hmm

Chilenachica · 05/04/2012 16:13

I don't see why you should expect your cat to sleep in his bed when my dogs chewed every bed provided to pieces. I have now given them the grass to sleep on because it grows backGrin

girlywhirly · 05/04/2012 16:30

Ours only sleeps in a proper cat bed when she goes to the cattery. She prefers to sleep on the bed with us. She does paw at DH to get off the chair he is sitting on, so that she can settle herself there during the day. He is daft enough to let her get away with it! And toilet times and nooky are accompanied by a solemn look.

MrsSnow · 05/04/2012 16:34

YABU! Everyone knows cannot be expected to anything!! We are just staff!

OldGreyWiffleTest · 05/04/2012 16:35

One of mine used to sleep on top of our 5ft tall fridge/freezer. We never saw him get up there - the first indication was when he 'batted' us when we opened the door!

ThisIsANickname · 05/04/2012 16:39

I will never again waste my money on a cat bed unless I expect it to be no more than decoration. My cats prefer: boxes, the bathroom sink, the bath, my bed, my pillows, my head, my stomach, my bum, etc.

youbethemummylion · 05/04/2012 17:03

I have had two cats in my lifetime, the first was bought numerous cat beds, igloos, radiator beds etc and refused to sleep in them, somehow we aquired a plastic dog bed which was in the cats room (utility room to you and me) and suprise suprise the cat slept in it.

When i left home and got a cat of my own I bought it a plastic dog bed from the start and it slept in it right from the start (apart from at night when she sleeps at the end of the bed to make sure she is not missing out on anything!)

They must know they are supposed to be for a dog so feel its ok to sleep in as its nit a 'cat' bed. Much the same way they will play with the kids balls all day but look at me like I've gone mad when I offer up a ball that originated in the pet aisle of the suoermarket.

DMCWelshCakes · 05/04/2012 17:51

Totally unreasonable. Just be glad he hasn't peed in it stealthily, leaving you to find it only when the smell reaches your nostrils.

(Can't just be us with a cat of vile personal habits.)

Lizcat · 05/04/2012 18:08

Posh Arrogant Boy must take the prize for most ridiculous cat sleeping position - in the seat of a small toy pushchair. Closely followed by a tuperware box that his bottom only just fitted into.

bettybat · 06/04/2012 10:10

I bought my beloved cat this when she was a kitten. It's intended for a kitten, it's only 60cm high, it's a tiny seat, and when she was a kitten she could hardly jump up on to it. We had to lift her on to it.

Now she's a fully grown cat of four - admittedly she's a very small cat - but she's very territorial of it, hates anyone going near it, and wedges herself into to it to sleep. It's her favourite possession. Sometimes I pretend to scratch the post just to see her go crazy with jealousy. The post is torn to shreds and it's a complete mess but you just know she will treat any new post with haughty disdain and ignore it.
