to resent digital ruddy switchover for taking away my digital channels?

Argh! Darn digital switchover thingy happened today in London and the Saaf East. Foolishly I did not think this would be a problem as we have a digital TV that handles digital channels just fine. Until now... BBC 1 & 2 and CBBC have vanished, never to call us Mother (or something like that). And we've retuned four times with no success.

I'm not going to have to go out and get a Freeview box to watch digital channels on a digital TV, am I? Really?

If your in one of the retune today and again a week or so areas wait till after the second date before panicking.
I believe they mess with transmitter power levels as well because overlapping areas interfere.
Hopefully when they've finished your bit of the country it will settle down.
Ours has got more stable time has passed. Pity the programmes are still rubbish.

Thank you Valpollicello, that is really helpful.

Pictures gone back to as it was this morning. Still got the channels though - plus a dark line down each side of the screen about 6 inches in from the sides.

HJisoffwork · 05/04/2012 07:59

We switched over ages ago. Tv often goes off in dodgy weather, channels come & go.
Digital tv is a pita.

sunshineandbooks · 05/04/2012 08:09

edam I've had this with my digital TV (the old TV with the freeview coped fine). I tried retuning several times to no avail but did it again the following day and it rediscovered all the missing channels, so my advice would be to just keep trying. Smile

musicposy · 05/04/2012 08:20

We were in March, saarf of England. We found that between the first and second date they gave us we were basically buggered. Retuning didn't seem to work and for some weird reason the sky box went haywire too.

Now we are almost there. We seem to have most channels back and DH has managed to get the sky box working, though it still has temperamental moments. DD1 has lost hers altogether but we need to look at it properly. She says she tried to retune it but I think I'll get DH to have a go. He's much better at getting these things to work than me has the patience to sit there for hours on end fiddling whereas I am bored after 10 mins.

The whole thing has been a monumental pain in the arse, mind you.

If you cant pick up all the digital channels, then there is a good chance that your aerial is not upto the job.

If your screen is pixellating or losing channels, again, it could be your aerial that is the problem.

The people on the helpline are not great with actually giving out the right information, particularly to the elderly, many of whom are really confused about the switchover. Our company install aerials and satellites, and I have had over 200 calls a day so far this week from people who have had our number passed to them by the helpline, and many have been given incorrect information.

People who live in flats with communal aerials are the ones likely to be affected most as many old systems will not be able to support digital channels and you cannot just throw an aerial up on a communal building on the say so of the residents.

Sausagedog27 · 05/04/2012 08:39

It could be your aerial rather than the digital tuner in your tv. We had an issue and my dh bought a little booster thing - think it was from wilko. You plug it in to aerial socket and then attach it to aerial socket in tv. Was quite cheap and did the trick for us!

edam · 05/04/2012 20:14

But I've got a TV ariel and the TV is plugged into it. How would I get a second ariel to work?

I'm in the South East so digital switchover happened yesterday. I've not retuned my tv as nothing has changed. All my channels are still where they should be. Do I need to do anything?

My mum is in the same village and has lost BBC 1 and 2 so I don't understand why I haven't. Confused

Dee03 · 06/04/2012 18:21

I'm south east too....I've now got 1 and 2 up in the bedroom and only 1 and 4 in the kitchen.....aarrgghhhhhhh

eurochick · 06/04/2012 20:51

Have you all rescanned? I had a couple of patchy channels on Wednesday morning but after rescanning everything was fine.

We have to do it all again on the 18th, apparently.

edam · 06/04/2012 20:56

No, I've been retuning a couple of times a day in hope but still no Beeb One or Two or CBBC.

Hissboo · 06/04/2012 21:41

I did my mum's today, no problems. Just don't understand why I haven't needed to scan at all.

wheredidiputit · 06/04/2012 21:52

Meglet

Dh lost a lot of channel on the freeview tv in our bedroom when he connected dd1 tv up.

He got an Aerial boster (from B&Q) and now they all back.

Edam

Perhaps they will come back when we have to do it again around the 16th.

feedthegoat · 06/04/2012 22:09

We had the same problem when the digital switchover happened in yorkshire. Eventually with multiple daily retuning most people we know got their full compliment of channels back.

We however lost most channels. It turned out after much googling that certain products were incompatible after switchover and our recordable freeview box was one of them. Dh thinks the list was on the official switchover site though I have to say I heard nothing before hand to say this could happen.

We'd only had the damn thing 2 or 3 years and paid over £200 for it too.

Dee03 · 06/04/2012 22:44

If I dont get all my channels back on the 18th I'm seriously going to be peed off Sad

harrassedswlondonmum · 19/04/2012 09:23

Did your problems resolve?

Everything was fine here on 4th but after yesterday one of my tvs has lost all the BBC channels. I have done factory reset retunes numerous times and nothing has changed. The other tv is fine so I don't think it can be aerial problems.

Help!

OlaRapaceFru · 19/04/2012 09:50

Another Londoner here. We lost all BBC channels for two weeks (can I just say I've realised how much I don't like the ITV News Grin).

Did the re-tune yesterday, one digibox was fine but the other one (which I think has been on its last legs for a few months now) completely lost every single channel - I did a few more re-tunes and only got about 10 (random ones) back, but when I pressed OK to watch I just got a fuzzy screen. I had to go out and buy a new one, but I thought that might happen.
