AIBU to think that children should be able to eat large chocholate bunnies at easter??

I've just got back from the supermarket and purchased a large choccie bunny of the gold variety - not the supersize £35 quid size one just a smaller version - so its on the belt ready to pay and a lady with an approx 4 year old came up and stated putting her stuff on the belt behind.

The little very girls says "Wow mummy look at that bunny" to which the mum said "yes darling, lovely, now you know your only only to get very little eggs and you have to hunt for yours, that's just a ridiculous sized bunny" to which the little girl looked sad and said "yes mummy that's ridiculous" and then she kept eyeing it up the whole time - she looked so sad

I felt like paying for the blumming thing and giving it to her!!

This wasn't by the way a case of them in no way being able to afford the rabbit - just having a nosy sweep of their shopping, I just thought it was a bit mean to make the girl think that it was silly!

I maybe would of said to my DS if he had commented "Wow yes that's cool, some lucky person is going to get it" not pointed out it wasn't them!

YABU

How do you know she doesn't have a whole cupboard full of eggs at home from friends and family?

The mum was rude to comment on the 'ridiculous size' but then again, perhaps she thought it was a ridiculous amount of chocolate for a small child who already has loads?

WorraLiberty · 04/04/2012 12:30

And how do you know what they can afford?

She might have another 4 or 5 kids at home.

nickelhasababy · 04/04/2012 12:31

not to do with affording.

yanbu the lady's comment was mean, not just to her dd, but also to you, whose shopping it was part of.

hairytaleofnewyork · 04/04/2012 12:38

YABU - not your business.

The woman could have said just "mmmm, yes!" to her daughter.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 04/04/2012 12:39

Depends on the size of the bunny. If it was the 5" tall one then YANBU. If it was much bigger than that then she may have had a point Grin

SparkyMcSparrowLaidMiniEggs · 04/04/2012 12:41

YANBU!

Chocolate bunnies are ace! :)

PooPooInMyToes · 04/04/2012 12:41

I think it is completely the ops business seeing as she was criticising HER shopping! Loud enough for op to hear.

OTTMummA · 04/04/2012 12:42

well, i think it was weird of the mum to make that comment, but i am with you, every now and then i like to enjoy the look of childrens faces when something amazing happens, like, finding a gigantic chocolate bunny behind a pot plant on easter sunday!
You sound great fun btw.

cabbagesoup · 04/04/2012 12:42

sorry hairytaleofnewyork - I'd missed out the fact the comments were directed towards me, not muttered to the side - the girl and mum were looking directly at me saying my shopping was ridiculous..

as I was tuned towards them loading my other shopping.

Just irritated me Grin

It's not the OP's business whether children should be allowed to eat large chocolate bunnies at Easter though.

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 04/04/2012 12:43

YANBU - my ds will be stuffing his face.....good luck to him thats what I say!

mosschops30 · 04/04/2012 12:43

YABU its up to her what she gives her dd at easter. (but i agree kids shud have lots of ott chocolate)

However i do think she was very rude commenting on your shopping like that Shock

usualsuspect · 04/04/2012 12:46

It would have irritated me too, bloody worthy easter egg givers. I bet she was a Mnetter Grin

Hoebag · 04/04/2012 12:59

I think the 'ridiculous size' comment is a bit rude.

but I have a 2 year old and I certainly won't be buying him adult sized eggs so maybe its that line of thought?

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 04/04/2012 13:02

I always think even with "adult" sized eggs, if you actually look at how much the actual chocolate weights, you are better off buying a bar of dairy milk or whatever..........even large easter eggs are very light so not much choc anyway, even for a little one :)

cabbagesoup · 04/04/2012 13:03

I'l measure the bunny now!! right she's a good 10" size!! and has a bell to boot.

bigknickersbigknockers · 04/04/2012 13:03

YANBU she was being rude to say that when you could hear.

cabbagesoup · 04/04/2012 13:05

I will of course be helping out lots with the eating of the bunny!

..and hollow in the middle :(........lol

TheFallenMadonna · 04/04/2012 13:13

She was bloody rude!

halcyondays · 04/04/2012 13:19

Yanbu and she was rude.

exoticfruits · 04/04/2012 13:32

YANBU-You were meant to hear and it was rude. Unfortunately I am always too slow to come back with a good retort in time.

the little girl looked sad and said "yes mummy that's ridiculous" and then she kept eyeing it up the whole time

Another DCs who says things for mummy and will do something else, when she gets the chance!

fedupofnamechanging · 04/04/2012 13:39

I think that if someone is commenting on your shopping, then whatever they are saying becomes your business.

I'd have piped up that I think little children eating giant Easter bunnies is a fabulous idea.

Poor kid, the mother sounds utterly joyless!

stealthsquiggle · 04/04/2012 13:41

YANBU - "wow yes that's cool" would have been my response as well. Poor thing - although it would have been interfering of the worst kind to give it to her.

FWIW, my DS once won one of the HUMUNGOUS ones in a restaurant (waitress fairly blatently fixed a free draw as he was the only child in the restaurant not being a complete nightmare). Lindt chocolate in that sort of quantity is not actually all that nice and most of bunny eventually ended up in the freezer and was then eventually binned because I don't even use milk chocolate in cooking - so one of those would be a ridiculous amount of chocolate, but the remarks still would have been rude, and mean.

MissFaversham · 04/04/2012 13:42

YANBU. The mum is of the "chocolate police" variety Grin who should keep her military opinions to herself.

I remember a little boy coming to one of my son's parties. He wasn't allowed anything remotely yummy sweet except fruit. He went missing. We found him under the table stuffing cake in his mouth.

Poor kid Sad
