It is on now. It is soooo 90s! And so full of cliches, that were probably born out if this film to be fair, but hey ho!

Safly, when I see young men in long black leather coats, I think of Herr Flick from Allo Allo, not lovely Neo. Grin

Tiddlyompompom · 04/04/2012 02:27

Erm, I meant 'sadly'.

anonymosity · 04/04/2012 04:51

Thought it was pants then, think it is pants now. only good thing about it was it had Keanu Reeves face in it.

Pity me, DD wants me to guide her through an essay about some philosophical take on this flick.:o

I love all the films based on that premise, though, echt! How real is reality? If you step out of reality as you know it, what happens? And what happens to the other people in the 'old' reality, do they just carry on as normal?

The Matrix raised additional questions about artificial intelligence and potential outcomes of depending too much on technology. Other 'false reality' films include The Truman Show and Spotless Mind. There are loads; it's an obvious subject for fiction writers as their work is all about creating a (temporary) false reality.

My therapy - to help deal with a peculiar upbringing - made it obvious why I'm so attracted to those films. People recovering from dysfunctional families often say it's like living in a film, and often specifically say The Matrix. You don't have to be psychologically messed up to get the point, though! We have been shown false evidence by the news media (as jokes and fraudulently) so it is actually wise to question what's 'true' and how much to believe.

My grandmother was a Christian Scientist. She believed that everything is a figment of god's imagination (or something like that) ... so she, basically, believed we are all in the Matrix Shock Confused

Can you tell I think it's a wonderful essay topic? Grin

garlicbutter · 04/04/2012 13:09

Just noticed the irony in your username for this topic Wink

YANBU. I have been a fan since it's craetion. LOVE it! All three of them. Bit of trivia here. The Virus Twins from matrix 2 were the twin brothers who did the Big Strong Boys thing years ago with Carol Vordeman!

The only thing that pissed me off was that I kept being called Neo because of my Jacket- even though I had it before the film was out!

MinnieBar · 04/04/2012 13:55

Love it, can watch it over and over. I just pretend that the subsequent two films never happened. Like with Star Wars episodes 1-3.

squoosh · 04/04/2012 13:57

One of my least enjoyable cinema experiences seeing this. Total boredom, but I realise others adore it.

My other least favourite was the Devil's Advocate. Total tosh.

Both star the cinematic heavyweight that is Keanu Reeves.

garlicbutter · 04/04/2012 14:01

Those of you who dislike The Matrix - do you dislike all the 'false reality' films, or just this one? What about Fight Club? I'm no keener on Pitt than Reeves, but I DID think he was cute in this one!

garlicbutter · 04/04/2012 14:02

the cinematic heavyweight that is Keanu Reeves Grin

MinnieBar · 04/04/2012 14:02

I could also watch Fight Club over and over.

victorialucas · 04/04/2012 14:06

When I first saw it I thought he was called 'Neil'.

I love the matrix have seen it do many times I couldn't count. Did anyone else recognise the white rabbit from heartbreak high and home and away?

I class it as one of those pre-millennium films that were quite 'end of the world'y.

I think it was a thoughtful precursor to the airbrushed/ media created world we now live in. We can't believe anything we see anymore and 99% of people choose not to dig below the surface.

IAmYourSingingTelegram · 04/04/2012 14:08

I haven't seen it.Any of them.

squoosh · 04/04/2012 14:10

I think I dislike all false reality films. As a child I used to get annoyed with books that featured talking animals, so I suspect I may be a bit pedantic that way :)

Haven't seen Fight Club, although I love Edward Norton so I should remedy that. There are massive gaping holes in my film education. I actively avoid any sci-fi, not in a sneering way, but I just don't enjoy it.

Hammy02 · 04/04/2012 14:11

I loved it. The sequels were tosh. No reason why we're not all asleep and this is all a dream? No more bonkers to believe that than most religious claptrap billions of people believe!

SeaHouses · 04/04/2012 14:12

Echt, it is supposed to be based on gnosticism and buddhism. Lots of the names are connected to gnostic belief - Thomas Anderson, the ship called Logos and so on. I think there is a bit in the first film where neo stands in front of a serial number on Morpheus's ship which is the numbers for a bible passage related to gnostic philosophy.

I think there are web pages somewhere that compare the plot to buddhism and gnostic mythic structure.

garlicbutter · 04/04/2012 14:19

Is that about discipline and strength of mind leading to truth, Sea? Too lazy to look it up.
