To be annoyed at the informal language my boss uses?

We're both in senior positions.

He calls me 'dude' or 'mate' in emails (manages 'dear' and 'regards'if others are cc'ed), or signs off with various silly comments/ text speak. He doesn't take the hint that I'm always formal

He texts if he needs to contact outside work, rather than ring my landline (he only has my mobile number because I used it once at work out of necessity).

So, am I uptight and old-fashioned? I just find it rude and disrespectful, or do I need to get with the times?

Just opening emails and I seethe each time (inside). I get the odd 'dude' to my face.

YANBU... there's a time and a place for informality and, even then, there's no time or place for as stupid a word as 'dude' to ever make an appearance. :)

KristinaM · 03/04/2012 16:21

I would hate it too. But im also old fashioned

Bangtastic · 03/04/2012 16:23

Bend over, this won't take a minute, quite a long stick you have up there but it shouldn't hurt too much....

ViniVidiVisa · 03/04/2012 16:24

I was waiting for that bang... and outside work with my friends we joke. BUT I barely know him. It feels cheeky because I'd feel awkward doing likewise to my boss.

I suppose you could e-mail back using worse words. 'Hey Daddy-o. How about that contract, matey-boy. We really nailed it bud. Laters... ViniVidiVisa' See if David Brent picks up the irony?

squoosh · 03/04/2012 16:29

Try working in the Arts. All emails are signed with a kiss and eveyone calls you 'lovely'. Would you like him to do that?

I used to have a boss years ago who used to spontaneously play air guitar with one leg propped up on my desk, waggling his balls around.

Worse than all this he used to make me HI FIVE him on a daily basis. The shame and horror. Blush

5Foot5 · 03/04/2012 16:56

squoosh Yikes! That sounds awful. Thank god I work in IT. I think most people I know would self harm rather than high five someone

Proudnscary · 03/04/2012 17:03

I think you need to lighten up a bit.

I write jokey things to my staff in emails, but I stop short of putting kisses on the bottom! Also it depends on the content and seriousness of the email. If it was a brief, then I'd be more formal (but would never put 'Dear' to my boss or team!).

Proudnscary · 03/04/2012 17:03

Oh that reminds me, my CEO fist bumped me when we had a good month's sales! Cringetastic.

SwedishEdith · 03/04/2012 17:04

Ha ha at squoosh Grin

Maybe your boss is enjoying winding you up a little OP? If you're both senior how boss bossy is he? Does he see you more as an equal?

AutumnSummers · 03/04/2012 17:21

YABU and a bit precious.

WorraLiberty · 03/04/2012 17:22

I find it quite funny actually Grin

ViniVidiVisa · 03/04/2012 18:31

er... squoosh, we may be talking about the same person. Does air guitar/ dancing etc. too. Touches knuckles though (well attempts) rather than high-five....

IT's just all a bit ego-centric for me.
