to think fruit and veg should be cheaper?!

This has probably been said before but why is fruit and vegetables so flipping expensive?!

Surely it would be in the governments interest to make it cheaper or not add VAT on it? I find it hard to afford enough fruit and veg to make sure we eat 5 a day everyday and sure others do too. I know some families get healthy vouchers but there must be a lot of families on low incomes who can't afford it.

Depends if you want actual meat in your sausages Grin

EduStudent · 04/04/2012 20:16

ASDA Smartprice sausages

A whopping 40% meat and 60% gubbins Grin

NettoSuperstar · 04/04/2012 20:25

I likes gubbins meGrin

In all seriousness, I used some last week.
I made American buttermilk biscuits with sausage gravy, and they did just fine there.
It wasn't a 'healthy' meal, but then no meal or food is, it's all part of balance.
I adore food and cooking, it's my hobby, and the one thing I do really well.

Yesterday I made four types of veggie burger, tonight I made two Chinese dishes with rice, and one of them was tripe.

I tried 14 new recipes last week, this week I'm up to 6 on Wednesday.
I think all foods can have a place, no matter how crap they might be on their own, and I work on that principal.

shockers · 04/04/2012 22:13

I'm not convinced that all foods have a place. There's no place for over processed foods or those with artificial sweeteners in my diet, and I make no apology for that. I'm not a food snob, I don't spend fortunes, but I do try to feed my family as healthy a diet as possible. They repay me by rarely being ill so something must be working!

BonnieBumble · 04/04/2012 22:42

When you say it like that Bronze it doesn't sound too bad. When I pick up a individual item and look at the price it just seems so expensive.

I think I might start shopping for my fruit and vegetables separately so it doesn't seem so bad. Perhaps the problem is pyschological.

NettoSuperstar · 04/04/2012 23:03

I'm disabled, it must be the food!

Joking, joking, honest.

I avoid artificial sweeteners like the plague. I avoid all crap on a regular basis, I prefer plain/undoctored that I can make into a great meal, but I still think anything can be included in a balanced diet.

My DD adores brainlickers. I hate them, with a passion, but will it kill her to have one occasionally?
I think not.
So long as she does that nasty slurping thing away from me, I can live with it.

shockers · 05/04/2012 11:05

Netto,...DD is disabled too, she hardly ever gets bugs though!! I think we're singing from the same hymnsheet... although I stand by my thoughts on Dairylea lunchables Grin.

EgguStudent · 05/04/2012 12:19

Oh they have their place occasionally, but if that is all you can afford to feed, then eating it several times a week is gonna start to push it a bit.

Debsbear · 05/04/2012 12:23

Buying fruit and veg from the major supermarkets is uber-expensive as they make a massive profit on it. There should be some sort of cap on teh % profit a third party is allowed to make. The farmers sure as hell aren't getting their fair share. I find buying from a small local greengrocer is far cheaper and the quality is far better, but I know that not everyone is that lucky. (They even have a free delivery service!!)

GrendelsMum · 05/04/2012 13:34

I'm in my 30s, and I don't remember eating fresh fruit throughout the year when I was a child to the same extent that we do now - we ate a heck of a lot of fruit in summer and autumn (I remember my dad buying trays full of peaches from the greengrocer), we preserved large amounts of fruit for winter, but basically in winter and spring we largely ate vegetables and pulses and the fruit we had put by.

I think that with the best intentions, we're often urged to offer our chidlren grapes, bananas, kiwi fruits, blueberries and apples every day, without any regard to seasonality or the resultant cost, and we forget our own cheap and seasonal vegetables and pulses.

shockers · 05/04/2012 13:43

I agree GrendlesMum!
