To ask if this is a nice idea

I'm thinking of buying an adult size charm bracelet for my Godaughter's Christening with a charm and putting in a little note that I will add a charm every year on her birthday until she turns 18. Not sure if this is a bit rubbish as it can't be used by the baby for a long time and it will be a few years before going on a shopping trip for a new charm and birthday gift will be exciting for her. Anyone with any other ideas or anyone who would have liked this as a gift x

My parents did this for me (with something to do with what happened in the year) up until I was 15/16, it's a great reminder of what went on and DD loves looking at it.

It's a lovely thought Smile (and will get you out of having to decide what to get her each year hehe)

AgentZigzag · 31/03/2012 16:08

I meant the charm represented something that happened in the year, like a house for when we moved.

There are even little people in the house Grin

It is a nice idea and I would like it as a gift, the only problem I can see is that if charm bracelets fall out of fashion you might struggle to get charms in a few years, I don't remember seeing many around before Links of London ones became trendy.

BitchyHen · 31/03/2012 16:14

My godmother did this for me, and my parents have done it for my dds. I have added to my bracelet over the years and even when charm bracelets were out of fashion I have been able to get charms. it's a lovely thing to have as it's filled with memories.

HarlotOTara · 31/03/2012 16:15

Lovely idea and you can get charms in the UKas I have done this for my dds. Actually when I have been in America I saw loads of charms everywhere I went.

wonkylegs · 31/03/2012 16:17

I have my mums charm bracelet from when she was a child (21 charms) my sister has my aunts - we may not wear them but they are dear to us. Charms can be bought from all sorts of places just got more common when LoL started selling them.

EdithWeston · 31/03/2012 16:22

There are always charms about - look in antique jewellers which are often cheaper than new, and Victorian ones will cover far more occasions than than I've ever found in modern manufacture (unless you're rich enough to commission one!).

I think it's a lovely idea.

DoubleGlazing · 31/03/2012 16:25

It's a lovely idea as a keepsake, although personally I wouldn't wear one.

Ineedacleaneriamalazyslattern · 31/03/2012 16:27

I think it's a lovely idea.
A friend of ours did something similar for dd and also bought charms that mean something about the year.

AgentZigzag · 31/03/2012 16:31

I have to say I've never worn mine ABigGirl, I'm not a charm bracelet kind of person Grin if there is such a person.

More a keepsake.

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 31/03/2012 16:36

My nanna's charm bracelet is like that, her father bought it for her and added every year until it was full. It's an heirloom now, and is very much treasured.

CupOfBrownJoy · 31/03/2012 16:43

Its lovely, but get a proper charm bracelet and not one of those Pandora ones - as someone said above they will probably fall out of fashion and you won't be able to get the charms.

I got a "proper" charm bracelet for my 21st and get a new charm for it whenever a big life event happens, eg my degree, starting work etc.

I was inspired by a friend of mine whose Godmother did exactly as you are proposing. She ended up with a beautiful bracelet with all sorts of interesting little charms on commemorating her life.

ImperialBlether · 31/03/2012 16:44

I really hate charm bracelets, sorry! They're too twee, in my opinion.

bronze · 31/03/2012 16:47

I did this for my dd but I also add charms for events such as starting school. I bought two bracelets, one child and one adult.

Agree not a pandora style

bronze · 31/03/2012 16:47

Forgot to say for her birthdays she gets a 'raindrop' charm

Jumpingovaries1 · 31/03/2012 16:50

Thanks everyone going to get a proper one so that I will always be able to get the charms. Now I just need a budding poet amongst you to come up with a nice poem to put on a card explaining that I will add to the bracelet each year. Writing lovely sentimental cards isn't my strong point.

I made the raindrop ones out of glass beads. It's because I adored the book a necklace of raindrops which is what started me on the idea. I also gave her the book at the same time.
Trying to think whats shes had
when first gave it she got a globe (because she meant the world) a family tree and lion because shes a leo ( I think)
cross for her christening
shoes when she first walked
book for starting school

I can't remember what else
I wrote them down so I can tell her what each was for
