they are just so full of character.

I did startle a poor one on Tuesday though when out for a run but I do look like miranda whilst jogging.

i like the way they sit so proud in the middle of a field, almost as if they are saying 'check ME out, i'm a hare' Grin

Agincourt · 29/03/2012 15:05

Have you seen them boxing UnChartered? I saw a couple last year but I am yet to see any this yet :( but it is just the best thing ever, even better than sex if you are the female hare, obviously!

MadAsASnakeNana · 29/03/2012 15:08

Agree - they are quite magical.

UnChartered · 29/03/2012 15:11

nope, not for a long time Sad

there's been a lot of large-scale building locally and i fear lots have gone, it's such an iconic sight, really means spring Smile

Mordred · 29/03/2012 15:15

I love them. Magical indeed, and the totem animal of our Wiccan line.

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/03/2012 15:19

My fake DH Terry Pratchett used them in one of his books and he says that when farmers burn stubble in the fields the hares run into the flames and don't get burned. Magical indeed.

Ahem - We now have The Great Outdoors topic for postings such as this.

Just saying.

We even have a March Top Trumps nature sightings you could enter Grin

Agincourt · 29/03/2012 15:50

oh can you link to the thread? :) I didn't know we had that topic/thread. I posted a thread about a birthing cow yesterday...I think i am obsessed with nature and the great outdoors

ExitPursuedByABear · 29/03/2012 15:55

There was a ongoing campaign to get the topic - we camped in World Cup 2010 for a while until MNHQ relented.

Will try and do a link

They are amazing, hares. I was walking up on a mountain track and saw one coming towards me in the middle of the track, as bold as anything. At first I couldn't immediately grasp what it was, it was just so unexpected, I thought chiuauaua with really long legs (this is my mind processing not me), then duiker (long legged tiny buck). Then hare. It registered my presence and turned around and strolled off. Lovely encounter.

AwkwardMary · 29/03/2012 16:05

Yanbu. We have begun to ride to school and see them on the way in the morning. Totally thrilled us all!

Shoshe · 29/03/2012 16:10

I've havnt seen a real one in a long time, last time was walking across Salisbury Plain with my Grandfather.

45 years later DH and I have moved within 4 miles of where my Grandparents lived, and this morning walking the dogs at 7.00 I saw 2! (daft Dogs didnt even notice them, which was good).

It was beautiful sun just coming up and there they were on the horizon, absolutely stunning.

Mordred · 29/03/2012 16:11

Hares have long been associated with the Goddess, rebirth and the spring.

The Easter Bunny is a fluffy reminder of the Spring Goddess' messenger and companion. Hares were thought long ago to lay eggs in nests in the fields, hence the association with Easter eggs.

There was a wonderful programme called 'The Fabled Hare' back in the 90s about these myths and associations. You can see Maddy Prior's thems song to this on YouTube.

  • theme song. Gah.
valiumredhead · 29/03/2012 16:33

Do you remember the book back in the 70's by Kit Williams? LOVE hares!

NoToast · 29/03/2012 16:41

Love them, my DDs middle name is Old English for 'the Hare's land' in honour.

valiumredhead · 29/03/2012 16:42

Oh wow, what's his name?

valiumredhead · 29/03/2012 16:42

her

Mordred · 29/03/2012 16:45

Harley? Probably not as that would be 'Hare Meadow'
