"I thought you were...(10 years younger)"

They just say, "Oh, right".

Couldn't you just add 10 years when they ask?

biddysmama · 29/03/2012 11:35

i have a 7 week old,19 month old,3 year old and a 10 year old, people often look shocked when i tell them i have a 10 year old and say i dont look old enough, im 30 next year.

Hassled · 29/03/2012 11:35

:o Same here.

And the thing is - a few years ago, so when I was, say, 41 and I'd say I had a 20 year old son people would say "I can't believe you're old enough!" and I'd preen. Now I'm 45 and I tell people my oldest is 24 and they just go "Oh - what does he do?". It's depressing as hell.

coolbeans · 29/03/2012 11:44

DS is now 8 months old - I'm 44 and he was a bit of a surprise ... People automatically assume I'm in my early 30's as I'm lugging him around, along with his older brother. The receptionist at the GP recently took me aside to tell me me I'd put my birthdate down incorrectly Grin. Clearly having a baby shaves off the years, though I think the bags under my eyes - why, why, why won't he sleep at night? - say otherwise.

Pontouf · 29/03/2012 11:46

People used to say it all the time to me. Then I had DS, put on 3 stone and about 6 years in 16 months :(

mayaswell · 29/03/2012 11:46

I have been toying with the idea of adding 5 years to my age for a while now, hoping to get that 'oh my god' response. However I'm not sure I care enough what people think, and vanity is pointless.

CogitoErgoSometimes · 29/03/2012 11:46

I remember really upsetting the office Lothario once when I was in my teens. "How old do you think I am?" he asked. (Bad question to ask, especially of a teenager) "36?" I said, thinking he looked pretty ancient and trying to err on the kind side of 40. He was only 31 ... Blush

mayaswell · 29/03/2012 11:49

Also I've seen people do a rapid ageing thing a few times, usually when something awful happened to them like an illness or crisis, and it's very sobering to see how quickly people change.

mayaswell · 29/03/2012 11:50

I hate that guess how old I am game.

Mrsjay · 29/03/2012 11:51

I have a 19 yr old well almost but they never say oh you dont look your age (40) i do get a twinge of dissapointment Grin

Mrsjay · 29/03/2012 11:52

I think i meant to say I get the twinge when people dont say you dont look old enough my post didnt make much sense to me Hmm

Mopswerver · 29/03/2012 11:52

Ha Ha this one made me laugh. Yes, it creeps up on you doesn't it? When I had my children (at 37 & 39 respectively) I did used to get people saying that I didn't look my age but gradually since then it has happened less often! I even had someone ask me recently who was the oldest between myself and my sister....she is 9 yrs older than me!!

LauraShigihara · 29/03/2012 11:58

Same as Hassled - I have always had comments about how young I look until recently (am quite baby-faced)

Suddenly, I say I have two grown-up children and instead of a ' Really! ', I get an 'Oh, right.'

I want to grab them by the lapels and shriek 'Did you hear me?' but just slink off to examine myself in the mirror again.

mayaswell · 29/03/2012 12:07

Laura, I shriek after I've looked. Best policy is avoid mirrors.

mayaswell · 29/03/2012 12:08

I can still remember the first advert for wrinkle cream that I paid attention to, because it was aimed at me and my little old sad face.

DeWe · 29/03/2012 12:31

Or they could say "never-I thought you were 10 years older" Grin
