"Petrol can" = made of plastic, contains 5 litres, red, green or black.

"Jerry can" = made of metal, contains 20 litres, normally khaki green.

I get the feeling that the real reason Francis Maude was told to withdraw his comment is that for every 100 people who will store fuel responsibly there's bound to be one who will fill their bath with petrol!

So depressing - we seem to have become a nation of idiots & panic merchants.

The minister doesn't know what a Jerry can is, the firebrigade think we are all utterly incompetent morons incapable of filling up a container with fuel, without setting ourselves on fire and naturally there will be some spanner out there filling an absurdly inappropriate bath tub/tuba/gas canister/insert other ridiculous recepticle with petrol to give every other normal human being a bad name!!!!!!

...................... AND the strike hasn't even been confirmed yet. GRRRRRRR

Bogeyface · 29/03/2012 10:30

It was in the national papers Whirly, they went to court over it, cant remember where it was though and Google is all about the current strike so I cant find it!

I do remember that it was a mental amount of petrol being stored unsafely and I think (but dont quote me) that they were involved in the petrol theft from peoples cars that was going on at that time too.

Shock

I've just got back from town, where it is bedlam. It seemed like everyone was queuing for fuel (except me)!

Oh, update - the khaki metal ones hold 10 litres, the maximum amount of petrol that can be kept in them at home is 20 litres, so 2 jerry cans is your limit. Or, curiously, 2 of the 5 litre plastic ones = 10 litres.
