or would sex discrimination and equal rights mean first came first served.

That was the family from Norfolk wasn't it? Saddest one I read was the Palsson family from Sweden - Dad waiting for them to join him in the States, his wife and all their 4 children died. The section about how he heard the news nearly made me cry. I had to stop reading after that Sad

And agree with a few here, it would still be the richest first even today.

McHappyPants2012 · 29/03/2012 17:31

Decided that I would of been in The lowest class so would of went down with the ship.

New plan drug the kids to sleep while me and dh get very very drunk

Oh God yeah Nini sooo sad. I know much was made of how many 3rd class passengers died, it's still remarkable that John Jacob Astor died (as did some other high profile first class passengers) considering that I'm sure it would have been much easier for them to get on to a lifeboat than lower classes. I'm not sure that would happen today, given the thrall we are in for money now. You can after all buy anything if you have enough money. A better future for your children, better education, nicer healthcare, higher survival chances in the face of serious illness... why wouldn't it buy you a greater chance of surviving disaster.

As an aside, has anyone seen the film 2012? It's really really shite, but the rich folk who jump the queue to get on to a life saving ship to avoid perishing in the flood that destroys the earth get squished. Funny how Hollywood gets all preachy about these things but I reckon they wouldn't be so honourable in real life.

Whatmeworry · 29/03/2012 20:17

I think it'd still be the rich who felt entitled to survive over others.

In that respsct auir travel is more egalitarian. I think this thread has persuaded me never to go to sea on anything except my own boat

gaelicsheep · 29/03/2012 21:52

To answer mayorquimby, yes I was being facetious. If it happened to us, I would want to be saved as a family or die as a family. The worst outcome would be for some of us to live and some to die. Perhaps that's selfish from my children's point of view though, I don't really know. I would certainly rather die alongside my children than live without them.

What a horrible thing to think about.

gaelicsheep · 29/03/2012 21:54

Also, this makes me think of the scene in the Titanic film where the mum is putting the children to bed (and to their deaths). I've often thought that is what I would do in a crisis situation. I would rather they died without fear, rather than go through something horrific and perhaps still die in terror. Sad

Blondilocks · 01/04/2012 17:53

If the tube is anything to go by it would be the survival of the fittest with the sharpest elbows and everyone else would probably get trampled in the stampede!

Lueji · 01/04/2012 19:38

Sonar and radar should have prevented it, but then should have Costa Concordia. Confused

Plus H&S rules would have ensured enough life boats for all (which weren't 100 years ago).

The best evacuation rule is that everyone goes out calmly but as quickly as possible, without trampling over each other. Assuming enough life boats, and that people are distributed evenly, they should be filled as soon as people arrive and no real need for selecting passengers.

The problem is usually how quickly the life boats are deployed (if the sea is calm). That was an issue with the Titanic and with the Costa Concordia as well.

ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged · 01/04/2012 19:48

I'm pretty sure it would be me and DS first, DP last of all. He's so bloody chivalrous that he'd make sure we were safe, then help everyone else he could possibly find, probably scouting round the ship two or three times to double check there was no-one else he could do anything for.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 01/04/2012 20:10

I just can't watch the 'Titanic' story, much as it interests me, it's just too sad. :(

KateSpade · 01/04/2012 22:03

I love the Titanic, such a horrible story, awful things happened, it makes me really sad, and a little bit scared to go on a cruise type ship tbh.

I'm putting my faith in the H&S now-a-days, as stated earlier, but i don't think i could go on one!

TinkerSailerSoldierSpy · 01/04/2012 22:41

Definitly children first with either a male or female parent. Especially babys. And i think quite a few men would be uncomfortable leaving women onboard while they left... :S

Morloth · 02/04/2012 06:00

Well, I think it should go my children first, the rest of you fuckers and sink or swim for all I care.

I am (sort of) joking of course...

WillowFae · 02/04/2012 09:39

I don't think you'd get the situation with the 1st Class men these days: where they resigned themselves to not surviving and put their wives and children on the boats. Yes, some got on boats, but most didn't even try to get on.

ComposHat · 02/04/2012 11:26

It is one of those sitiuations where I realty don't know how I'd act til I was placed in that situation. It would ve easy to pontificate from the comfort of dry land and day I would nobly get out of a life boat so that a child could take my place.
I fear panic and the urge for self preservation would take over and I would prioritise me and mine above all else.

mayorquimby · 02/04/2012 13:44

exactly how I'd feel composhat.
More than happy to say I'd be noble now, but I know in reality that faced with life or death I'd value my life infinitely more than I'd ever value a strangers regardless of their age/sex/family status etc.

SlipperyNipple · 02/04/2012 14:06

This thread has made me so sad. I'm just not going to cruise. At least if a plane goes down you can be pretty certain everybody dies and it will be fast.
