to ask nursery to change the form

Went to collect little one from nursery today and when I arrived was told that she had a mark on her cheek, under her eye and was asked if it was there in the morning. I (and my husband as he was with me) said no. I would have mentioned it if she'd hurt herself at home and I'm pretty sure staff would have commented as when I saw it, it was pretty obvious. It's like a graze/burn along her cheek bone just below her eye. Only they said they don't know how it happened as she hadn't cried at all, although they had been outside most of the day so could have happened then. Apparently they asked her what happened (she's just 2 and not talking much!) and she said 'mummy'.

So they had an incident form for accidents off site all completed ready to be signed, stating that she said it had happened at home with mummy. I signed the form but as soon as I left it felt all wrong and I, probably stupidly, got in a bit of a state about it. I rang them as soon as I got home to try and explain that I didn't feel it was an accurate record as we are as sure as we can be that it didn't happen at home. It's not that we want to blame anyone but I want the record to be accurate. They were okay about it but now I've convinced myself that they think badly of me...either that it did happen in my care and that I have somethng to hide or that I'm being akward somehow.

It's realy worrying me! AIBU?

Write a letter saying you just want to confirm your telephone conversation that the mark on your child was not the result of an incident at home and that the child was fine when she arrived at nursery.

OTTMummA · 27/03/2012 20:20

Why did you sign it?
You clearly do not believe that it happened at home, so why didn't you ask the nursery more questions?
They can't just fob you off with 'she didn't cry all day blah!'
Well some children don't cry if it happens quickly, or while they are having fun, that is the point of adult supervision, they should be watched by an adult who should of noticed this at some point, soon after it happened.
If the morning staff had of noticed it, they should of asked or said someting then, they didn't so i am inclined to believe it happened there.

Take the form back, and get them to write on it that the morning staff didn't raise a query about an injury upon drop off, and that the likely hood is that it occured at some point during her stay at nursery.

I want and always make sure i get accurate notes/forms from nursery with ds if he comes home with more than a bruised leg, arm etc, your dd is an unreliable source as she can not communicate effectively.
Her saying mummy to the question asked most likely meant she wanted you there to make it better, at 2 staff would or should know this.

YANBU.
I would go through with them again about the process when a child becomes hurt, and ask why she was left marked and hurt without anyone noticing until it was pick up time.

meredeux · 27/03/2012 20:20

but I shouldn't worry (unless she suddenly starts to get a lot of injuries whilst at home)

Birdsgottafly · 27/03/2012 20:26

Don't worry about it, but never sign anything that you haven't read or don't agree with.

dribbleface · 27/03/2012 20:31

OTTMummaA - they may well have noticed it before pick up, but were unsure how it happened. My DS often has marks/bruises that I have no idea how he got them (whilst at home), I really don't think as a one off it indicates a poor nursery.

OP - do ask for it to be updated but they wouldn't have given it a second thought (in terms of your worry that they think badly of you). Also graze marks sometime are unnoticable until they start to scab so could have happened at any time

lazzaroo · 27/03/2012 20:49

I know I was stupid to sign it without being sure, I didn't initially notice it was an 'off-site' incident form as opposed to a general incident form.

I would have told them if it was there in the morning as it's policy to do so, and I am confident they would have noticed had I not anyway as they usually do.

They told me they would do a new form for me to sign when I am next in but I am just to mad at myself for not reacting better there and then.

Sorry, should have read 'so mad'.

They really are a good and caring nursery and she loves it there. I have no doubts about their standard of care. It's my own mistake for the way I dealt with it.

this just makes me glad I have a sensible CM. I collected DS2 tonight and he had grazed his cheek on the slide. The only mention was when my CM said oh DS2 tried to climb up the slide. This sort of thing happens everyday, it's just that nursery's need to cover their backs. You are NBU OP, and I would have been entirely pissed off that they had tried to blame me.

FunnysInLaJardin · 27/03/2012 20:59

btw DS2 is just 2 as well

dribbleface · 27/03/2012 21:00

Not really, they shouldn't have filled in an off site form if they were not sure, we would have put it on a general accident form and then annotated it if it turned out it happened at home.

Blondeshavemorefun · 27/03/2012 23:52

seems weird the nursery didnt notice it when it happened

is it more like a burn - as you said she was outside most of the day, was wondering if your dd got sunburnt (as been very hot where i am today)

lazzaroo · 28/03/2012 18:40

Thank you for all replies. The latest is that the manager phoned me this morning to say she agreed it was not the correct way to record the incident which they think happened while they were playing outside. A new form is to be completed for me to sign next time we are in. It's still a mystery as to how exactly it happened and so how best to treat it. The best way I can describe it is like a friction burn, running a couple of inches across her cheek bone, just below her eye. It looks a little bruised too. We are hoping it doesn't scar but I ghuess these little ones are bound to get into all sorts of scraps while having fun. It's on eof those things!

Silly of you to sign the form, wrong of them to fill in an existing injury form half way through the day.
