Barge past you when you are looking around a store? Today it seemed to happen to me multiple times and I was Angry by the end of the trip! I had no DC with me for once, I am not unreasonably wide or clumsy or anything...nor am I slow or dozy....I was looking around in various shops and in almost every one, assistants, rushing about seemed to think that I should get out of THEIR way instead of the other way round.

I will say that sometimes yes, the customer should move...like when the assistant is carrying a lot of things...but when I am walking to an item of stock and they barge past me...well I think NO! You wait! You are here all day, the job you are doing isn't going away....I however am the customer and I come frigging first!

SO. AIBU? I have been a shop assistant lots of times in the past by the way...I never did this!

True Nannyogg Grin

It's a second hand shop, gabid, so nothing is in order anyway. It's not like I'm massively changing the order of things, generally just putting stuff face out/spine out and removing any which are the wrong letter.

abbierhodes · 26/03/2012 21:07

I don't believe that happened in Debenhams OP. You'll be accusing Waitrose staff of farting next.

DoingTheBestICan · 26/03/2012 21:10

Me too usual,I work in a shop and work bloody hard, last week I was shouted at by customers because I had the audacity to carry on serving a customer instead of running back to the till and immediately serving them.
We can't win can we? We have had hrs taken off us to boost profits but they and the customers expect more and more from us.

MargueritaaPracatan · 26/03/2012 21:14

Ooh, 'ave an 'eart, m'lady, times is tough and the job's gotta be done. Grin

Nanny0gg · 26/03/2012 21:14

I've worked the other side of the counter as well as being a customer, so I know how difficult some people can be.

However, it is rude to talk to colleagues whilst serving, and it is rude to barge customers out of the way or tidy up the area they are browsing.

MargueritaaPracatan · 26/03/2012 21:18

I hate the shop assistant bashing threads too, people generally just want to do their best, times are tough and hours are cut, people are working harder and harder because the job still needs to be done.

usualsuspect · 26/03/2012 21:19

I think some people think shop assistants are a different species to them.

gabid · 26/03/2012 21:19

abbierhodes - Oh! So Waitrose staff never have that urge?

BertieBotts · 26/03/2012 21:21

As a customer, I have never cared if shop assistants talk to their colleagues. As long as they are serving at the same time and not dithering because of a conversation. I like it when you as the customer get included in the conversation too, it's just friendly.

chocolatebuttin22 · 26/03/2012 21:24

gabid Love how you have noticed the ASDA happy to help :) ASDA live by this saying. Think it has something to do with the managers sitting in the office watching the shop floor and service collegues oh and the mystery shoppers that come into store twice a month lol.

and OP its not shop assistants its just rude people, you get them every where believe me. 9/10 they are probs p'd off because of a customer thiking yet again that they are right, which it isnt fair that they take it out on you.

I work for ASDA and I work my little butt off, pleasing customers with my happy to help :)

usualsuspect · 26/03/2012 21:25

I can't say it bothers me if they talk to their colleagues either. Don't we all talk to our colleagues at work?

Debeez · 26/03/2012 21:29

I've done shop work and my DP works in a shop now, these sales assistant bashing threads are great. We HATE bad customer service, I got barged past in Primark (No debenhams for me ladies) today and then they tried to take my sunglasses off me in the changing rooms, erm no, they're MINE, I bought them in a different shop two years ago, I will not leave them here with you, they're not from your stock, I am not a shop lifter. She just stood with her hand out for most of the exchange and repeated "I can't let you take those in".

My DP works bloody hard at his job, gets his share of mad customers, but mostly just lovely people wanting a bit of help and a friendly face. If you don't want to help/smile/be polite don't accept your wages.

DoingTheBestICan · 26/03/2012 21:32

No usual,as shop assistants we must not dare to speak to each other and we must know by psychic powers what the customer wants, that way we can be sure the customer is happy,if they aren't then maybe we could have a stint in the stocks?

usualsuspect · 26/03/2012 21:32

That will be the minimum wage will it?

usualsuspect · 26/03/2012 21:33

I work in a cafe , I too have psychic powers Grin

chocolatebuttin22 · 26/03/2012 21:35

Debeez I also hate bad customer serivce, as a result of working in retail for many years. I try not to knitt pick but its so hard!

wheresthepopcorn · 26/03/2012 21:36

No, YANBU. Just shop somewhere else.

DoingTheBestICan · 26/03/2012 21:37

It could be that the sales assistants are doing the work of 2 people,it could be they are tired from doing the work of 2 people, maybe all you people who are upset at us shop workers should complain to the head offices, that way we might get more staff on the shop floor.

DoingTheBestICan · 26/03/2012 21:39

My psychic powers allow me to know what advert the customer saw last night this knowing what item it is they want me to find for them.

Nanny0gg · 26/03/2012 21:41

So some of you don't think it's rude to ignore the customer you're serving whilst chatting away to your colleague on the next till?

Sorry, I do.

usualsuspect · 26/03/2012 21:44

We all have conversations where I work , the customers join in and talk to us like actual real people.

DoingTheBestICan · 26/03/2012 21:46

They do where I work to,is quite funny actually cos we have real conversations and everything!

Debeez · 26/03/2012 21:47

Yes Usual the minimum wage, believe me we're grateful for it and just because it's minimum doesn't mean it's below DP to work hard for it.

Chocolate the majority of sales assistants work so hard and part of the urge to knit pick is the wanting to scream "You're letting everyone down! They think we're all like you!" I am obsessed with nice sales assistants, I don't shop local anymore cos they're rude and don't give a hoot, go a bit further afield and even though it's a giant Tesco with hundreds of staff they're so personal!

usualsuspect · 26/03/2012 21:48

And in my local co op I know all the assistants and we all chat for ages.

Sootie · 26/03/2012 21:51

Yes YANBU. Most recently happened to me in Co-Op!
