To sometimes wonder if ALDI post threads here?

lesley33 · 26/03/2012 11:16

Have noticed over the year I have been here that there are a lot of threads about how good ALDI is and what are your favourite ALDI products. I have even posted on these sometimes myself. But it does seem to come up so frequently I do wonder whether sometimes they are actually posted by someone from ALDI? AIBU in thinking this?

I haven't tried Aldi but I did try Lidl. I did a shop, and then went to Morrisons to pick up the stuff that Lidl didn't stock. As I went around Morrisons, I checked my Lidl receipt against Morrsions prices. Morrisons was cheaper.

I will not bother with Lidl again. Perhaps it is something about the store that makes people choose cheaper products when they are in there (hotdogs rather than fresh meat, squash rather than juice and so on), rather than the products themselves actually being cheaper.

Hmmmmn Lesley, how do WE know this isn't a double bluff Hmm

I think you should post your last 6 months pay slips to prove you are impartial

There was a family on TV who were challenged to shop at Aldi once. She got some minced beef and drained out two tray fulls of water and fat.

I've bought some beef from there too and it was pretty much inedible.

Oh and I also remember hearing about cheap chicken sold a Aldi's being pumped up with water.

(No, I'm not a stooge for Aldi, honest!)

Some things might be better value but I'm not prepared to make 2 shopping trips a week just to benefit from a few pounds off.
I would only ever buy fruit and veg from there. I've looked at the ingredients on some of their cereals and they are packed with sugar and salt. So no, I'll stick to cheap supermarket brands safe in the knowledge that I probably wouldn't save that much anyway.

The steak mince is good. Not bought the ordinary mince

Honeydragon - darn you sussed me!!! Yes I am an ALDI stooge.

I love Aldi and have never had any problems with their meat, fish, wine, chocolates or electrical products...and their bratwurst are just yummy!

We only have a small family (me, DH and 17 month old DS) and we shop there all the time - and have done for years.

I only ever buy the premium steak mince and the free range chicken and haven't had any problems with either - suspect cheap mince is pretty shite wherever you buy it from, the cheapest mince in Aldi is a pale pink as compared with the deep red/burgundy of the steak mince, I wouldn't eat it but then I wouldn't eat the value mince from any other supermarket either!

SeaHouses · 26/03/2012 13:11

Are you meant to rinse mince?

lesley33 · 26/03/2012 13:13

You don't rinse mince Shock

No free range though and apparently it's common practice to pump up inferior meat i.e. chicken with water and is a practice that Ashfield Farm, who supply chicken to Aldi, have been accused of. You can inject up to 10% of the chicken with water without needing to declare it on the packaging.

Also last year I think, their frozen mince was found to have 23% more fat than was listed on the label.

The red wine is tongue blackening stuff.

lesley33 · 26/03/2012 13:15

The most expensive wine at £6.99 IS GORGEOUS.

'Tis not!

undercoverPrincess · 26/03/2012 13:19

I think I will try Aldi this week, I've just done a mysupermarket which was coming up £82 on Asda, £97 on Sains and £99 on Tesco, Tesco is getting more expensive than Sains????

lesley33 · 26/03/2012 13:19

Tis!

What do you buy elsewhere and for how much?

Lesley, I think all the 'I love Aldi' threads are because MN'ers read about it, then get sooooo excited that they have to write a thread and share Smile. I'm a convert, I love it now and had only ever tried netto before which I hated! I'm sure i've been boring the pants off my family/friends with my endless 'guess how much this cost at aldi...?' gushing questions!

MardyBra · 26/03/2012 13:28

Haven't got an Aldi or a Lidl in our town. Does that make me posh?

TheRhubarb · 26/03/2012 13:30

We're wine snobs lesley. I shop at Asda, buying smart price everything but when it comes to wine it has to be a Rioja or a Bordeaux, preferably aged in oak. That can be expensive but we keep our eyes out for bargains in Sainsbos, Asda or Morrisons. Dh will sometimes call in at Morrisons to do the shopping and if the wine is good, we'll buy lots of it to last until the next bargains come along.

That's the only thing we spend money on. A good bottle can transform an entire meal. A bad bottle is used for cooking.

lesley33 · 26/03/2012 13:49

I buy the most expensive rioja at ALDI. But please tell me a better Rioja to buy? Would really appreciate it.

I used to go to Aldi now and again to stock up on a load of basics but would always have to go to another supermarket to get the rest of the stuff we needed, or things that I wouldn't buy from Aldi.
But after 18 months or so I realised that the prices were going up up up and it was no longer the bargain shop it used to be.
You have to buy lots of fruit/veg in bulk, when really we needed less; we were avoiding lots of their packaged food eg cereals as they are actually much higher in salt, sugar, fat than other brands; and on comparing till receipts I realised that their prices had mostly come up to the same, or even higher, than the other supermarkets... So we were no longer saving money by going there in addition to other stores, just wasting our time. There are a few things that are actually cheaper there. I go in once every coupla months for some frozen prawns and ground coffee!

hiddenhome · 26/03/2012 13:52

Aldi are bloody marvellous and imo are doing a valuable public service by selling affordable food in this current financial climate. We went to sainsbos a few days ago and their prices were ridiculous. I had to go there for the cat's food though. We always shop at Aldi and their stuff is great. They're even cheaper than Lidl too Smile

TheRhubarb · 26/03/2012 14:03

We had the Berberana 2008 that I think dh got from Morrisons on Sat and it was lovely. We also have the Vinedos Barrihuelc 2007 in our wine rack that has yet to be sampled. Also the Campo Viejo is very good, 2006 is the best year for that one.

Which one do you get? I've not seen a rioja in Aldi but at that price you can get a decent one in Asda or Morrisons.

emsyj · 26/03/2012 14:14

I buy the £2.99 French white from Aldi Blush - I think it's very nice.

Frozen mince is vile, cannot imagine why anyone would buy frozen mince tbh - the reference to rinsing was a ref to an old thread on here that clearly not as many people read as I had thought! Whoops.

Does your Aldi not sell free range meat TheRhubarb? It always surprises me how different each branch is (display, stock, niceness of staff etc).

whatsallthefuss · 26/03/2012 14:22

doyou think its a coincidence that LIDL and ALDI are anagrams.... oh no i see now that they arnet!
