To want wood flooring in our loft bedroom? Survey

tak1ngchances · 24/03/2012 16:45

We are in the middle of a loft conversion, choosing tiles, paint, plug sockets yadda yadda.

Our bed will have a creamy upholstered headboard. The walls will also be creamy beigey taupey. I really want Walnut flooring. However DH wants carpet for the following reasons:
Warmer underfoot
Softer underfoot
Quieter (under our loft is a guest bedroom that will get used max 8 times a year)

I absolutely LOVE wooden floors. I have never had one, closest I came was laminate in my first flat.
I think we can get beautiful soft rugs either side of the bed for something soft underfoot when we get out of bed

But I don't want yet another freaking carpet.
AIBU?

DH suggested I do a survey here. Can you give me your thoughts, preferably based on experience?

Sorry, agree with your DH, we have a loft extension and even with carpet we can hear dd moving around - real wood floors would be very noisy. (Also had stripped floorboards in our bedroom when we moved in got a carpet pretty quickly).
How about having wood floors downstairs as a compromise?

tak1ngchances · 24/03/2012 16:49

Can't afford to do anything downstairs, this loft will bankrupt us as it is!

Chandon · 24/03/2012 16:50

we are getting carpet too, because of the noise thing

tak1ngchances · 24/03/2012 16:51

Chandon have you got wooden currently?

It is noisey and if the room isn't going to be used a lot, it won't need an easy clean floor.

Also can you get to your electrics, upstairs, without ripping the floor up, carpets are easily worked around, it lights, wiring needs replacing.

Thumbwitch · 24/03/2012 16:52

Too noisy and too cold. I have wood flooring throughout my house and lots of rugs as a result. I agree with your DH, sorry.

troisgarcons · 24/03/2012 16:53

Real wood looks lovely - laminate is meant for kitchens and bathroom IMHO. Unless you live in Sweden where they laminate with style and panache Grin

Thumbwitch · 24/03/2012 16:54

Oh and the rugs are a bit of a PITA for slippage - I do have non-slippy stuff under them but it loses its grip after a bit and needs replacing which I haven't yet got around to

tak1ngchances · 24/03/2012 16:54

Yes it is real wood. American walnut and shocking expensive. It will be our bedroom that we sleep in every day. It's the room underneath that is seldom used

wood

AgentProvocateur · 24/03/2012 17:00

Go for it! I have a loft bedroom that is sunny and gorgeous - in fact, I'm here just now! If the room below's not in constant use, the noise won't be a factor. If you can afford a gorgeous floor, do it now when you're getting the rest of the room done.

I have solid oak flooring throughout downstairs, and it's surprisingly warm underfoot.

TeaTeaLotsOfTea · 24/03/2012 17:04

I have wood floors in my loft conversion. Very noisy and not very warm at all.

If I could afford I would get carpet.

Remember that loft conversions can be really cold in winter even with good insulation.

I have to agree with your DH sorry

cwtch4967 · 24/03/2012 18:20

Another one who agrees with your dh - we have wood everywhere exept our bedroom which is a loft conversion. We have thick underlay and carpet over old floorboards and it's quiet and cosey.

MrsSnow · 24/03/2012 18:31

We are half way through our loft conversion and have decided on wood flooring for all those reasons mentioned. We are having an extra membrane/underlay/sound proof thingy put under the wood floor though.

In addition I'd say the loft is on a floating floor with a steel beam supporting it so noise wise it would be minimal. Since we have had the floor set up properly we can hardly hear the builders walking around upstairs. So noise isn't an issue for us. We will also be having a rug with an anti slip thing.

YellowDinosaur · 24/03/2012 18:33

How about a wood floor in a room downstairs and reuse the carpet from there in your loft bedroom?

tak1ngchances · 24/03/2012 23:34

Thanks all for your suggestions. A hung jury. I will just have to work my inimitable Irish charm on DH to get my way

Carpet. We have wood everywhere and it's noisy, cold and hard.

nobutyeahbut · 24/03/2012 23:45

We have wood flooring in our loft conversion. Whilst not the warmest it is lovey with rugs.

Also dh laid some sound proofing "stuff" big green tiles under the flooring and it's not noisy at all.

cookcleanerchaufferetc · 25/03/2012 08:57

Carpet for reasons as above... Sorry!

inmylife · 25/03/2012 09:01

Wood, definitely. Maybe a bit noisier for the guest room, but you will sleep so much better in a clean non dusty environment.

onadifferentplanet · 25/03/2012 09:12

As long as the room underneath is little used i think its fine, otherwise having just spent the night staying with friends in a room underneath a room with a wooden floor I would say no,I cannot believe how noisy it is !

iscream · 25/03/2012 11:42

We have hardwood floors in our bedroom and while it looks great and is really good as far as allergies and so e easy to clean, it is cold in winter and does make noise. We do have bedside rugs, but I am thinking of buying a large carpet, maybe a Persian rug, that will go underneath the bed and around it a few feet, as I feel self conscious if the bed creaks. That way we still have the wood showing, but will be warm and soft and quiet!

iscream · 25/03/2012 11:43

I think wood will increase the value of your house too.

claudedebussy · 25/03/2012 11:56

i have an american walnut floor Smile tis lovely and silky smooth.

i would go with the floor but bear in mind the noise will be a problem. what if you decide to make the guest bedroom a child's bedroom? you'll have to plaster the floor with rugs.

ah - just go ahead and do it!!

gobbledegook1 · 25/03/2012 12:24

I'd go with carpet, wood, laminate and the likes are very cold and noisy.
