To be miffed that a stranger kissed my baby?

I was in Tescos earlier today. A member of staff...an older lady who I've never met before...came up and started talking to and tickling my 7mo DS. I don't mind people playing with him like this but then she kissed him on the top of his head!

AIBU to think it's very inappropriate to KISS someone else's baby??

I think is lovely. But someone stroked my 10-mnth-olds cheek and she bit her finger... so maybe the LO is less keen?

hotheels · 23/03/2012 18:05

I think I heard somewhere (might be wrong) that babies can catch the herpes virus -cold sores from being kissed, anyone know if that's right?

MardyArsedMidlander · 23/03/2012 18:09

I have never heard of anyone having herpes ON THE TOP OF THEIR HEAD...

Sparklingbrook · 23/03/2012 18:12

Grin Mardy. Someone will be along shortly to tell you it happens probably.

hotheels · 23/03/2012 18:14

What mardy? You know people who Kiss babies with the top of their heads? Fuck me, where I'm from that's called head butting!

NurseJennyLee · 23/03/2012 18:14

Oh and don't forget the AIDZ Hmm.

I think it's lovely, I'm so proud when people delight in my little chubster.

MardyArsedMidlander · 23/03/2012 18:16

I was talking about a kis- not a 'Glasgow' kiss Grin

Anyway- it is a fact that if G-d hadn't meant babies' heads to be kissed, He wouldn't have made them smell so bloody wonderful.

Pagwatch · 23/03/2012 18:17

I am going to invent a bugaboo quinnytastic contamination suit in a selection of colours. And a small clip on gun turret for prams.
That will keep affectionate nice fuckers away.

I will become an mn partners and you will all get a small discount

Sparklingbrook · 23/03/2012 18:19

Water cannon and Tazers as optional Pagwatch?

TheBigJessie · 23/03/2012 18:20

Aw, that's lovely.

DesperatelySeekingSedatives · 23/03/2012 18:24

She kissed your baby on top of his lovely little head. She didn't snog him Hmm

My 2 have often had people coo, tickle and kiss them. Mostly little old ladies. The only time I admit to being a bit Hmm was the time a man in his fifties was chucking DD under her chin and kissed her hand but that was because he was so pissed he nearly ended up in her buggy on top of her.

Pagwatch · 23/03/2012 18:31

Ooh tazers!

That could be an accessory.

Sparklingbrook · 23/03/2012 18:38

Yes, Tazer if they touched the baby, but Pepper Spray for looking at baby. Wink

Gah when I first had DD (pfb) we went to Australia and there is a big Italian community in the part where MIL lives. My MIL had a dinner party on our second night... and the house seemed full of Maria's and Giovanni's and DD who was 2 months old, was taken from her travel cot and passed around this table of strangers all evening...who all kissed her and hugged her and fed her.

Shock Grin

I was breifly horrified but then realised how lucky she and we were...to be surrounded by so much love.

AwkwardMary · 23/03/2012 18:47

Plus my huggy DD was sooooo happy to be nestled in so many arms. I went to sleep!

Pagwatch · 23/03/2012 18:49

"Yes, Tazer if they touched the baby, but Pepper Spray for looking at baby"

what about an unintentional glance in the vague direction of the baby?

I think that is a quick kick in the crotch.

PurpleRomanesco · 23/03/2012 18:52

Aww, Aren't babies lovely...

Booboostoo · 23/03/2012 19:19

Yes of course you can pass on the herpes virus by kissing someone on top of the head (as long as you have an active blister that is!). It is transmitted by skin to skin contact, most easily through the mucous membranes (so mouth and genital area are top candidates) but can also be transmitted through cut or broken skin (loads of people get it on their fingers) and a particularly unpleasant version is herpes in the eyes (also can be transmitted through shared towels, utensils, etc).

UnChartered · 23/03/2012 19:23

Pag i can hear 'Dragons Den' calling Grin

TheSinglePringle · 23/03/2012 19:30

This wouldnt bother me. I remember taking son out when he was a few week old and a woman saying '' ohh if you weren't looking I'd have snatched him'' and then laughed. Now that was weird

MyBaby1day · 23/03/2012 19:44

I can see why you'de be slightly miffed (hygiene and things) but as someone said she probalay ment well and had Grandchildren that age!! ha ha x

Sparklingbrook · 23/03/2012 19:48

Told you someone would be along to say Top of the Head Herpes can happen Mardy.

Booboostoo · 23/03/2012 21:18

That's because it can! :)

I am super paranoid about not passing on my herpes, especially to poor DH and DD!!!

Joking aside, herpes passed on to newborns can be extremely dangerous and even life threatening, and some people do not think before touching/kissing babies. I would rather they didn't do it. Even if all you get is the common cold, who wants a young baby to get that just because a stranger wanted a cuddle/kiss?
