to expect STBXH cuts the grass while the house is on the market

STBXH had an affair which he denied all last year and I found proof of on New Years Eve.

By 2nd January he was saying he wanted his equity out of the house and the house to go on the market.

I agreed as cannot afford the house on my own and told him he could organise estate agents ... He has finally gotten round to it.

I told him that the grass needed cut and as I will keep the house tidy for viewers I expect him to cut the grass.

He doesn't see how he gets any benefit of this but I pointed out that we will get a better price for the house..

AIBU to ask him to do this? I don't think so but he does!

Thanks x

Is he still living in the house? To be honest I don't think YABU, but if he's not there then what's to stop you cutting the grass?

CogitoErgoSometimes · 22/03/2012 14:03

YANBU but selling houses during break-ups does not bring out the best in people. If it's a nice house a potential buyer will see past a bit of unkempt grass.

MissMogwi · 22/03/2012 14:05

YANBU to expect him to help make the house presentable to buyers. However, he can (and sounds like he will) do what he wants.

You might as well cut it yourself as
the sooner your house sells, the sooner you are rid of him.

Loving the nickname by the way Wink

HerRoyalNotness · 22/03/2012 14:06

I can't think why you wouldn't just cut the grass. Did it not get cut before when you were both living there happily? It's not only for the benefit of selling, it's for your benefit for every day living / kids playing in the garden.

glasscompletelybroken · 22/03/2012 14:08

Well the question is - would you cut the grass if the situations were reversed and he was living in the house?

sausagesandmarmelade · 22/03/2012 14:08

YANBU to ASK him to do it....

YABU if you are telling him to do it

Big difference!

Twit · 22/03/2012 14:16

Agree, YANBU to ask (not demand). Is there a reason you can't mow it though? As you're living there it's only right that you keep the place tidy IMO and any repair jobs and the garden should be both of your jobs. But if he's awkward I'd just get on and do it and sell as quickly as possible.

Sorry you have to go through this - hopefully you'll sell up quickly and be able to move on Smile Good Luck.

LiarsWife · 22/03/2012 14:46

I actually started cutting the grass last weekend but as he had taken the extension cable I was only able to cut a small section.

I don't think it is fair for me to do all the work to attract potential buyers when he is the one who wants to sell though!

I never cut the grass before - he always considered that I was incapable of doing anything as well as him and criticised everything I did so I just let him do it.

YANBU get the lazy lying bastard to do it.

tinkertitonk · 22/03/2012 15:43

Er, get a new cable (10 quid for 10 meters on ebay) and cut it yourself?

MissFaversham · 22/03/2012 15:48

YANBU. TELL him to do it! If he's the one that wants to sell it say that until the bloody grass is cut you won't accept any viewings. What a dick.

RuleBritannia · 22/03/2012 15:59

Take legal advice. If you have children, you could well be allowed to stay in the house. When I divorced my XH, my advice was to find out about his pension and, when I bought his half, the price of his half was reduced by 50% to take his pension (lost to me otherwise) into account.

If we had sold the house and had half each, I would have lost out tremendously. I am still in the house several years later children have flown the nest.

Waxtart · 22/03/2012 16:02

I would go and buy a lead and mow it myself. I wouldn't go looking for an argument, plus I'd want to show my ex that I was perfectly capable of standing on my own two feet.

GravyAndALumpyMashBaby · 22/03/2012 16:05

Do what RuleBritannia says.

Otherwise, if he wants to sell, he can cut it, if you're desperate to get rid then do it yourself.

WhereYouLeftIt · 22/03/2012 16:33

Good advice from RuleBritannia.

Got a text from my neighbour - he has been round and cut the grass while I've been at work :)

Now to get him to pay me for the school photos he's ordered!!! (It's a constant battle) :(
