To give my 2yo DD fish fingers for breakfast?

Tiredandgrumpy2 · 22/03/2012 08:00

My 2yo asked for fish fingers this morning. She's been poorly with various viruses on and off for weeks and this week she's been off her food and vomitting for a couple of days (there was a break of a couple of days and then she vomitted yesterday too).

This morning she greeted me with, 'good morning. I want a fish finger.'. After further discussion she still seemed keen on fish fingers so I am cooking some for her.

Seems like a weird food for breakfast but how nutritious is cereal really?

My 2 year old son wanted pasta the other day for breakfast!

JustHecate · 22/03/2012 08:02

It's been my view for years and years (ie after I got over my PFBitis Grin ) that very little actually matters. So if she wants fishfingers give her fishfingers.

Nobody ever died from having fish fingers for breakfast and cereal for dinner.

Most of the stuff we do we only do because we think that's how it's supposed to be done and not because it actually matters one jot anyway.

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 22/03/2012 08:03

Why is it weird? It's only convention that dictates that certain foods are for certain meals, and bacon, egg and sausage, or kippers, or kedgeree are all considered breakfast food... why not fish fingers? If that's what she wants, let her have them Grin

Tee2072 · 22/03/2012 08:03

As I am never a fully functioning member of society until after my coffee, my son has whatever he wishes for breakfast.

This morning it was 2 slices of ham.

Sometimes it's pickles.

Fish fingers sound perfectly reasonable to me.

MackerelOfFact · 22/03/2012 08:04

YANBU. The classification for what is or what isn't a suitable breakfast food is pretty abritary - if she was asking for sausages it would barely be worth mentioning, but I reckon fish fingers are probably better in terms of salt and fat than a sausage.

If she's been poorly and now feels stronger and wants fish fingers for breakfast, go for it.

Callisto · 22/03/2012 08:07

My DD struggles to eat anything before 9am so she basically has what she likes for breakfast just so that I know she won't be hungry at school. She has had cold pizza, pasta, rice, roast leftovers, whatever really as long as it isn't sugary.

Goolash · 22/03/2012 08:08

Has to be better than many cereals :) You can't go wrong with some lean protein first thing.

One of my children loves pasta and tomatoes for breakfast, the other often asks for baked beans and cheese.

catgirl1976 · 22/03/2012 08:13

At first I thought -odd. Then I remembered kippers. Plus as you say a fish finger has got to be better than a lot of cereals

I'd get grilling :)

TroublesomeEx · 22/03/2012 09:52

Yep it's a social convention that we eat cereal for breakfast and fish fingers at other times.

It's neither natural law nor an absolute truth.

FredFredGeorge · 22/03/2012 09:56

YABU to even think you are being unreasonable. Fish fingers are a perfectly reasonable breakfast food.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 22/03/2012 09:58

...especially in between two slices of white bread... :)

OrmIrian · 22/03/2012 10:00

Why not? Kippers and kedgeree are breakfast food - and bloody lovely too,

whatsallthefuss · 22/03/2012 10:01

i'm glad she's feeling better.

any time my DD requests food that is good for her she gets it! no matter what time of the day. this is becuase she is a very fussy eater, and always has been.

I watch portions and look at her overall intake in the day. if she wants to graze all day, thats fine with me, so long as, at the end of the day she's had her fruit and veg, protein and carbohydrate.

I appreciate that this isnt for everyone, but it suits us, and it ensures that she is eating a healthy overall diet, which wasnt happening before. before we would stick to her meal times with no snacks whatsoever in between, but still she would eat only her mash, or only her beans, or only her ham. she seems to have a problem with food touching or mixing. so by the end of the day she would have eaten a handful of cereal, no milk. two slices of ham from lunch. bowl of beans for tea. Obviously not enough to sustain a child. now she eats freely she will happily eat a bowl of broccoli, so long as its only broccoli

miaowmix · 22/03/2012 10:05

I grew up on fish fingers for breakfast, it seems perfectly normal to me! Cereal, on the other hand, feels like some kind of punishment.
It's fine Smile.

LimeLeafLizard · 22/03/2012 10:06

Well unlike whatsallthefuss I am a bit of a stickler for trying to give food at mealtimes or snacktimes, because with 3 kids wandering round wanting different things at different times it would be chaos.

But as she says, each family has to do what suits them... and if fishfingers for breakfast works for you, go for it!

OldGreyWiffleTest · 22/03/2012 10:09

I agree with Gwendoline - nothing better than a fish finger sandwich.

MrsMumf · 22/03/2012 10:11

YABU because now I want fish fingers for breakfast and I'm vegetarian

ElephantsAreMadeOfElements · 22/03/2012 10:12

A protein-rich breakfast is in many ways a better start to the day than a carb-heavy one, so fish fingers are a better option than most cereals.

Lueji · 22/03/2012 10:13

Whatever they want to eat after being ill is fine.

You can eat whatever you like at breakfast. Protein is good, because it last a while longer than carbs.

Sarcalogos · 22/03/2012 10:20

At work we get a free breakfast not quite stealth boast and fish fingers is always one of the choices, seems normal to our kitchen department!

GwendolineMaryLacey · 22/03/2012 10:23

Yeah but doesn't vegetarian mean you can eat fish and chicken? Wink

netbook · 22/03/2012 11:18

After reading this, I'm having a fish finger sandwich for lunch

Yanbu btw!

Tiredandgrumpy2 · 23/03/2012 19:10

Thank you lovely people! I feel much better about it having read your logical and supportive posts. Sometimes I am so sleep deprived with her baby brother that I'm not sure whether I'm being a really slummy mummy or a just a sensible one.

By way of an update, DD really enjoyed her fish finger breakfast an even cut them up with a knife! First time I've seen her do that. Grin

Glad she enjoyed it. Sometimes when you've been poorly having something you fancy does you the world of good.

people · 23/03/2012 19:17

YANBU - I feel rather proud of myself when I send my DCs off to school on a fish finger sandwich - protein's supposed to help them concentrate don't ya know
