Your right mollie if its not going to be based on household it should be the other way around

Hecubasdaughter · 21/03/2012 16:36

Another thing is with rising unemployment it becomes an employers market so they can get away with keeping wages low. I used to earn 30k now the thought of earning 20k is an unachievable dream. Our CB makes the difference between eating and not eating.

pigletmania · 21/03/2012 16:37

Don't know why sovery same position

misslinnet · 21/03/2012 16:38

Depends on your outgoings - housing costs for instance can vary wildly across the country.

The most worrying thing as far as I'm concerned is the effect on my pension entitlement - a SAHM receiving CB automatically gets NI credits through the CB so continues to build up her entitlement to a basic state pension.

As far as I know, the government hasn't mentioned what happens to the pension entitlement of a SAHM who loses CB because her DP earns over £60k. It seems grossly unfair that SAHMs might lose their rights to a state pension because their DP's earn over £60k.

And while I may not need the CB now, I bet I'll need a pension when I hit retirement age.

All the means testing of CB could get expensive too...

MrsHeffley · 21/03/2012 16:41

Thats before tax surely so not reality.

As has been explained before many in this bracket are on just over what people on benefits get re cash in pockets.

Either people are getting too much in benefits or the higher tax band is too low.

MrsHeffley · 21/03/2012 16:42

Also if you live in an expensive area some will be worse off than some on benefits.

We will lose our CB, and as a SAHP my concern is about the CB/pension link as mentioned by several posters up thread a few pages.

I think not very many SAHP are aware that claiming CB has been protecting their state pension entitlement.

R4 did a program about this a few months ago, and they were criticising the lack of publicity about the CB/pension link, and were advising women who would lose CB due to having a high earning partner TO KEEP CLAIMING CB, and it would be taxed at 100%, so you'd get no money, but your NI contributions would continue to be paid, as they are now.

Does anyone know if this is still going to be the case? The big criticism from the experts on R4 (money box, I think), was that people are not being given this information and will lose pension contributions if they stop claiming CB.

So why can't a few SAHM's with high earning husbands, go out and get a little part time job and thereby contribute to NI and future state pension.

At the other end of the scale parents have had to increase hours from 16 to 24 to qualify for wftc, so i don't see why the more priveliged are bleating. The poorer working families have lost EMA - £30 per week for those on less than £20K, which is a heck of a greater proportion of income than child benefit to the over £50K brigade. This cut in child benefit was talked about last year as was the hourly increase on wftc, so plenty of time to do it. I have, I'm 49, SAHM and carer (without pay) for 22 years and reliant on a low income wage earner. We went without things, cut cloth according to pattern and survived.

Where would all the cushy part time jobs come from though?

petitema · 21/03/2012 16:52

What an ignornat post OP. You have no clue really. Oh yes its all waitrose and private schools in our house. Hmm Why the bloody hell should families with higher earners loose CB and continue to subsidise those who recieve other benefits

petitema · 21/03/2012 16:53

Why should we/I get a little PT job? And where would I get this marvellous little earner?

Angry YABU. I would not presume to tell someone what they do and don't 'need' financially, particularly without knowing their personal financial situation. It's as presumptuous, simplistic and crass as saying someone earning considerably less should get a better job that pays more so they don't have to claim the benefit!

minouminou · 21/03/2012 16:55

A little job in a cake shop, like Adrian Mole envisaged for Pandora?
Dream on. Some women will manage this, but not all.....then what?

petitema · 21/03/2012 17:00

True that all tax payers subsidise benefits, higher earners more so. Smile

catgirl1976 · 21/03/2012 17:01

YANBU

I will lose it and I think it's right that I will

petitema · 21/03/2012 17:01

I know lockets, its a piece of piss obviously. Hmm

StealthPolarBear · 21/03/2012 17:01

Dh pays tax at higher rate, I don't, will we lose it?

Hecubasdaughter · 21/03/2012 17:07

Getting any job is a nightmare right now. I've been looking at part and full time jobs and have had only one reply. I know I'm particularly bad in terms of employability but I really don't think it would be that easy for all these mums to find work.

Starwisher · 21/03/2012 17:07

You would only be tutting at these middle-class housewives for "taking" jobs that others actually really needed to eat

Also I worked out my childcare costs would be £27k a year
