Chicken breast fillets have not fully defrosted (think my fridge is too cold)

how can i defrost them in the next half hour to go in my slow cooker for the day without giving us all the runs??!

Sorry i know this is wrong topic!

put them in a bowl of cold water? Not sure it will work in time but probably will and I'm pretty sure that's a safe way.

WaitingForMe · 21/03/2012 08:20

Cut them up.

natwebb79 · 21/03/2012 08:21

Defrost setting on microwave?

lizziebennet · 21/03/2012 08:21

Put them in a small bowl and then put that in a larger bowl of boilingish water?

Or use the defrost setting on the microwave?

MrsKittyFane · 21/03/2012 08:21

Cut up into small pieces, put in bowl and microwave on defrost for 5-10 mins.

ScarlettAlexandra · 21/03/2012 08:21

use the defrost setting on your microwave. it usually involves weighing it. failing that place in freezer bag and plonk in a bowl of tepid water.

but you can cook chicken from frozen it just takes longer. i have never had the runs doing that.

MrsKittyFane · 21/03/2012 08:22

Xpost :)

madasa · 21/03/2012 08:22

Put slow cooker on timer to come on in couple of hrs when they will have defrosted......only helpful if you have a timer I know

lisad123 · 21/03/2012 08:24

I would stick them in slow cooker cut up, it's going to be cooking for a long time, sure it will be fine

VegimalStyle · 21/03/2012 08:28

Were they bought frozen or fresh (and then frozen)?
Most shop frozen chicken breasts can now be cooked from frozen. Check the pack just in case.

GingerWrath · 21/03/2012 08:29

Just chuck them in the slow cooker, they will be in all day, it'll be fine.

Imnotaslimjim · 21/03/2012 08:30

Stick them in frozen, it'll be fine! They're going to be in there for hours, and it reaches over 100 degrees so any bugs will be killed anyway

CrystalMaize · 21/03/2012 08:30

Just put them straight in, they'll be fine

TandB · 21/03/2012 08:32

Put them in a bowl of lukewarm water in the sink and run the tap into it at a tiny lukewarm trickle. Moving water defrosts quicker than still, hotter water. Some chefs did an experiment.

TheSkiingGardener · 21/03/2012 08:34

Cut them up, put them in cold water for half an hour, put in the slow cooker. At no point are they then getting hot and then cold again. If they are going on all day they'll be fine.

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 21/03/2012 08:37

Personally, I think that putting them in the slow cooker semi frozen is waaay safer than leaving them in tepid water! That was something I was taught NEVER to do, at catering college!

YouOldSlag · 21/03/2012 08:39

Just use the microwave, that's how i always defrost frozen chicken breasts. (Doesn't work on a whole chicken, leave that out to defrost overnight for the cats to lick)

LtEveDallas · 21/03/2012 08:49

I'd put them straight in

MaryPoppinsMagic · 21/03/2012 08:59

Ok, so I'm going to cut them up and put them in the slow cooker on high for 6 hours.. I hope I don't poison us all I'm cooking for my sick mother so I doubt she will appreciate food poisoning ontop of kidney stones

naturopath · 21/03/2012 22:07

did it work? Is she ok??

MaryPoppinsMagic · 22/03/2012 17:28

Naturopath - were all still alive and the slow cooker is empty as everyone ate it so in future I will be doing the same thing

Good old mumsnetters!

Ok, well I'm going against the majority and say you shouldn't put frozen food in SC's - I can't remember why but my mum told me why and it was something about not getting hot enough quickly enough and it was a sure fire way to get food poisoning. She did years at catering college so I believe her Grin

valiumredhead · 22/03/2012 17:37

From a food safety site - mum was right!

Don't put frozen or partially thawed meat or poultry into a slow cooker ? they take longer to get to 165°F, and can also cool everything in the slow cooker. That's like building a bacteria playground

Thetokengirl · 22/03/2012 17:41

Should be just about now that the diarrhoea hits Grin

MaryPoppinsMagic · 23/03/2012 08:51

Pleased to report were all still alive no food poisoning, although I think I have an ear infection hopefully not related Grin
