I am planning to potty train my 2.5 year old over easter and would like some advice please. How long do we need to stay at home? Should I leave her naked for the first few days from the waist down or get her use to pulling pants up and down? Knickers or training pants or pull ups???? How long after getting the hang of the potty should I try her on the loo with a toddler seat? When we eventually do go out do I need to take a travel potty or try her on toilets if she needs a wee? My friend lets her child wee on the road if she is desperate is this acceptable????! If we are travelling on the tube for an hour or so should I stick a nappy on her just in case or just leave nappies off for good (apart from at bedtime)?

Sorry, lots of questions but I want to try to get it right and not stress her out smile

Yes, YABU posting in AIBU because there is a place for this thread and this isn't it.

I didn't stay in at all - DS had been using potty morning and evening anyway so knew what it was for. We got training pants (were used to washables anyway) which gave a little more leeway to the time constraints. Potty went in buggy basket when we went out to the park. Don't recommend an all-in-one waterproof combined with potty training though. Ds basically sorted over the weekend - went into nursery the following week and they continued quite happily.

Have you got a link to your thread degroote78?

I am really surprised that you have got no posts. Generally mumsnet is a kinder place than that.

I think that YABU to decide when to do it..... tbh we just waited until they were ready. DS was done in 3 days and DD was done in a week, so IMO it depends how easy you want to make it on yourself. To be fair though we had had potties / toilet seats aroudn the house for months before and they would have a little sit on them if they fancied. Then when we decided to do it properly, I had let them run around with no bottoms on for an afternoon. if they cant hold their wee then you are wasting your time! Once it was apparent that they were going about 2-3 hours between wees then I thought that would be a good time.
Let them choose their own potty and put stickers on it, buy big boy / girl pants of their choice and make a whacking great big potty training chart and buy sepcial stickers (whatever they are into) that are only for the potty chart.
Praise dry pants and sitting on potty / weeing on potty like there is no tomorrow. We never used training pants any used nappies at nap / bed time.

Also be ready to accept that they might just not be ready. Some kids are better at pooing first, both mine were better at working out the wees. I didnt find it stressful at all but think that was becuase we waited until they really wanted to do it themselves and didnt try to make them in a restricted time span. I did try with DD about 3 months prior and after half a day gave up as she was so blantantly not ready - 4 wees and 2 poos in half a day, so just waited for a few more months! Good Luck

Loie159 I work full time so had to do it when I had a week off work. She's been showing the signs of being ready for a while now it's just the first change I've had to do it as I didn't want it being a third me, a third her dad and a third the childminder as I thought that would make it much harder. If she's still not ready I'll wait until summer when I have my next block of time off. Thanks for the advice :)

degroote78, give potty training ago. If after a week you have no sucess then wait until later in the summer. I think you are being sensible wanting her to have one week with a consistant carer.

It is lovely when they are out of nappies and not having accidents and the only sure way to know if they are ready is to give potty training ago.
