To think that with Kate Middleton's education, she should be able to give a 3 minute speech without notes?

Given that new graduates at my organisation are expected to give 30 minute presentations without notes.

YABVU

Being confident public speaking has nothing to do with intelligence/education. My Cambridge educated, highly articulate DP whose job involves talking to people day in, day out, absolutely hates doing presentations to large groups and has to prepare incredibly carefully.

When I make speeches/applications in court I do so without any notes - but I have a near-photographic memory and I prefer to improvise once I have a few key points in my head. A much more senior barrister friend of mine writes all her speeches out long-hand because she can't work off bullet points or without notes. She is, without doubt, a considerably better court advocate than I am but simply can't manage without copious notes - her brain doesn't work that way.

There is no reason why Kate Middleton, any more than anyone else should be talented at public speaking. I doubt she had to pass an oral exam before being allowed to marry a prince.

YABU.

Link here for those who want to see how she did.

Fucking hell, people are just desperate for this woman to be wrecked aren't they? Has it been too long since Di? Does she need to die tragically for people to be happy with her?

I don't get it. She seems nice enough, why do people care so much?

I love it when unreasonable posters can admit their mistake, whilst casting the spotlight on posters even more unreasonable than them Grin

Shock snigger.

I pity the people in OP's organisation if there is no allowance made for being nervous. I come across many, many people who can't do public speaking at all.

ReindeerBollocks · 19/03/2012 22:31

I wouldn't want to be KM even if it meant having beautiful hair, a lovely figure, and her amazing wardrobe. The continual media glare she faces would unnerve me.

At first I didn't get the hype but actually she continues to act with amazing maturity and grace, rising above all of the critics and continuing to find herself as a new royal. I think she is doing very well given all the pressure she must be facing (and that's without the speculation of future heirs). Honestly I don't think her having notes is a big deal when you consider all the changes she has probably had to adjust to within the last eighteen months.

exoticfruits · 19/03/2012 22:35

She can't win. If she was word perfect, with no sign of nerves, people would find something to moan about. If OP was to give us a speech on something I dare say we could analyse it and find plenty of points to criticise.

Moester · 22/04/2012 11:47

Why should Kate be held in a different standard than other 30 year olds? Is she immune from a certain public speaking criticism that I am not privy to? Is it because she's a royal so criticising her is taboo?

She did poor in her speech. She kept looking down every few seconds even to say the words "Thank you". She did not look like someone who practiced with the speech in advance else she would've memorised a bit of the speech already.

I hate to compare her to Diana but this was Diana's first speech and look at the vast difference.

Take note, she had to speak Welsh! She was only 20 then yet she did miles better than Waity.

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 22/04/2012 11:49

Why are you reviving all the Kate Middleton threads just to slag her off?

It's wierd, and says more about you than it does about her.

I think she's lovely.

mayorquimby · 22/04/2012 11:59

fuck that. I'm a trainee-barrister, my whole profession and education has centred around advocacy or public speaking and there's no way I'd give a speech of that manner without some sort of notes.
