Changing the pronunciation of DD's surname

Right. Do you think it is ok to change the pronunciation of DD's surname?

DP and I aren't married but have been together for 9 years, very happy and very close to his family, blah blah.

His surname is Waugh and the family pronounce it Woff, our daughter has his surname and I prefer it pronounced Warr (if that makes sense)

I think that it can be said either way, do you think I'm being a bit Hyacinth Bucket about it? Or is it ok? DP couldn't care less, he thinks it's fine either way.

I'd read that more as Warr than Woff tbh, and people would say Warr if that's how you pronounced it.

If your DH isn't bothered either way I'd carry on how you are.

Has your DPs family brought it up or anything?

It's Warr. Just don't correct people to Woof if/when they pronounce it correctly (Warr).

That's a good point, he doesn't really say his name out loud very often as he spells it out. I don't think that would matter.

His family have never brought it up, they sometime call DD by her full name, and in my opinion, the wrong pronunciation! She's only a tiny baby so she won't know...yet!

I'm just worried that they might be a bit offended...I don't want to hurt their feelings but I think it's sounds much nicer Blush

I would have always said "Warr" for Waugh...but I do think it's odd to change it really...I mean names change over generations....they have the name they have....it's a bit weird. Like choosing a nw name....why give her DPs name when you're not iyswim?

I personally don't hold with children automatically getting the Fathers name anyway...

Kayano · 17/03/2012 23:08

I had 'one
Of THOSE names' before I married. Every bugger pronounced it wrong. It could read several ways

My dad used to get so stressed about it and corrected them. I did to as it was my family name and pronounced that was and to change it would feel like denying it and a snub to my dad iyswim?

So YABU

AwkwardMary · 17/03/2012 23:08

Laamb I think they'll be offended too!

Kayano · 17/03/2012 23:10

Mine was very similar
To OPs surname actually (but started
With a H and ended with a -ton Wink

And we Pronounced it hor-
But I got Hoff-
How-

And a 'hagger-' once. I was Hmm

fatherchewylouis · 17/03/2012 23:11

As you pronounce laugh as larf I think you are all being unreasonable and you should pronounce the surname warf...

HeidiHole · 17/03/2012 23:11

Warr is right! Pronounce it correctly, she's YOUR daughter you decide her name

Kayano · 17/03/2012 23:12

Heidi she is 'their' daughter, not
Just OPs. Bit pointless giving her his name at all if you totally change it Confused

WhiteTrash · 17/03/2012 23:14

Warr definitely.

Laambkins · 17/03/2012 23:15

Oh no! They would be offended, I know! That's why I havent done it.

Mary, I'm not sure why either...I blame that new baby glow I had, would be much simpler with my surname Smile

I could maybe do it without anyone knowing...never saying her surname out loud in front of his family and always spelling (obv DD will have to be in on it) Grin

OP posts:
Laambkins · 17/03/2012 23:17

Father - where I'm from laugh is laff Grin

OP posts:
Laambkins · 17/03/2012 23:20

Yeah, she is ours - DP thinks its hilarious that I care.

It just sounds better...and it's the 'right' way to say it!

OP posts:
Tryharder · 17/03/2012 23:20

If they pronounce is Waff then surely that is how it's always been pronounced through the generations and so I would say that you would be a little presumptious to change it off your own back.

juneybean · 17/03/2012 23:21

Ooo interesting, we have a bridge here called chartershaugh and I say charters-hoff... I'm in the North East... could it be a regional thing.

Laambkins · 17/03/2012 23:26

Juneybean - We are in the NE, maybe that's it.

Oh bugger, maybe that's it, I cannee dee it! Sad

olgaga · 17/03/2012 23:27

Hardly anyone will every pronounce it Woff! Stick to Warr. It's the most widely used pronunciation.

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 17/03/2012 23:28

I don't get it.

If the family say Woff and it's their name, who are you to think you should change it?

olgaga · 17/03/2012 23:28

Sorry, Waff!

olgaga · 17/03/2012 23:29

Now I'm confused. Woff or Waff? No, definitely stick to Warr.

LadyWidmerpool · 17/03/2012 23:31

It's often 'Woch' like 'loch' in Scotland! [helpful]

trikken · 17/03/2012 23:31

Id say Warr too. Had a friend with same surname said as Warr but might feel strange changing pronounciation from the rest of the families.
