For refusing to attend a picnic when it's going to be cold outside

Yes I know spring is just around the corner BUT ...

It's going to be 9 degrees on Sunday and SIL has planned a picnic. She is used to getting her own way via hissy fits so ILs and DH are still going even though they've all said to me they don't think it'll be much fun. I think they are a bit scared of her.

AIBU for preferring to stay at home where it's cosy and warm?

is it a special occasion, or just a prima donna whim ?

QuintessentialyHollow · 16/03/2012 19:12

There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing.

Or at least have an indoors back-up plan if it isn't warm and sunny.

anonacfr · 16/03/2012 19:20

YADNBU

Winter is not picnic season.

carabos · 16/03/2012 19:20

Completely agree with you - YANBU. One of the joys of being an adult is that every now and then you can just say "nah, don't think so thanks."

ronx · 16/03/2012 19:21

The stupid thing is that the back-up plan was supposed to be lunch in a pub. But, oh no, the picnic is going ahead.
I can't work out if SIL is being deliberately difficult.
I'm having no part of it. I'll be tucking in to some hot soup Grin.

AKMD make that Quint in down jackets and thermal trousers, having an outdoors bbq on a frozen beach, in the dark, (under the northern lights), with the kids. Grin

We always had a street party on the 23rd december, with a bbq, jagermeister, and christmas cake, whatever the weather, while the kids were sledging!

undercoverPrincess · 16/03/2012 19:24

Lunch in the pub? On the busiest pub lunch day of the year??? My friend that works in a pub that does food was laughing at school pick up today at people STILL trying to book in for Mother's day lunch when they have been fully booked for weeks Grin

AKMD · 16/03/2012 19:25

Ah ok, I'm not au fait with Shetland Isles party gear Wink Crazy... Street party sounds fab though!

undercoverPrincess · 16/03/2012 19:25

Plan C. McDonalds?

TrinityRhino · 16/03/2012 19:26

But 9 degrees isn't exactly cold unless there is a chilly wind

Layers dude Grin

QuintessentialyHollow · 16/03/2012 19:26

No, the norse dress like the Michelin man, not in Shetlands gear, that is way too stylish, and cold, for the arctic. Wink

ronx · 16/03/2012 19:28

You lot must be hardier souls than me. Grin

ah, Mothers day < penny drops >

ronx · 16/03/2012 19:34

SIL has also refused to postpone picnic to a quieter (and possibly warmer) weekend.

YABU ya big wuss.

AKMD · 16/03/2012 20:16

Picnic on Svalbard: excellent idea. I'll just get my electric reindeer hide out...

Maybe she's trying to establish herself as terribly jolly English upper class? Stiff upper lip, making the best of it, being a sport, broil your own rabbits and all that.

Gumby · 16/03/2012 20:18

why would she change the date?
she's clearly doing it for your mil?

squeakytoy · 16/03/2012 20:19

put an extra jumper on and stop being such a misery!

Meglet · 16/03/2012 20:20

yanbu.

I don't mind long walks if I'm wrapped up warm. But sitting still in the cold is miserable, I can't get warm unless I'm moving no matter how may layers I wear.

RuleBritannia · 16/03/2012 20:22

Why not just join in, dressed appropriately, and have a good time. Perhaps you could introduce a warming outdoor game. Frisbee perhaps?

FilterCoffee · 16/03/2012 20:27

YABU. Put your thermals on and smile - you're not going to the North Pole :o

seeker · 16/03/2012 20:30

Picnics in winter are fabulous. Don't be so wet!

AnyFucker · 16/03/2012 20:40

she is doing it just to piss you off, OP

success Grin
