I didn't even know they existed but dh has brough one for his sister as we plan to announce my pregnancy on Mother's Day. Also broughy a Nanny one for his mum.
AIBU to think this is a little OTT.

Depends on your relationship I suppose. My one aunt was and still is like a mother to me. I always get her a card.

CogitoErgoSometimes · 16/03/2012 15:15

YANBU. Excited man with money to burn....dangerous combo.

ilovedjasondonovan · 16/03/2012 15:16

Yes, they are a bit OTT.

But, there are certain situations they fit. For example a girl in my DDs school class is an orphan and is brought up by her nan. So a 'nan' card in this instance fits perfectly.

But in most circumstances its marketing gone mad.

DoMeDon · 16/03/2012 15:16

if you dont get it - they're not for you. i never understand why things like this bother people

peugotgringo · 16/03/2012 15:33

Is he doing it as part of the announcment?

They are getting the cards to allow them to be told the news, rather than your DH and yourself making a speach?

If it's that I actually think it's a really nice gesture, I'm close to my brothers, i'd have loved to have rec'd a card like that to tell me i was going to be an auntie.

However, I do also get your point about them being OTT too

thefurryone · 16/03/2012 15:41

Whilst I imagine the motivation from the card industry is one of, lets make mothers day cards for other female family members so we can sell more and make more money. I can definitely see why some people would find it nice to be able to buy cards for people who are not their mother but play an important role in their lives.

I think your DH's idea is very sweet though, if I received a card like that telling me I was going to be an Aunt I'd be really touched.

thegreylady · 16/03/2012 15:43

I used to buy one for my auntie until my mum died-then I just couldn't do it.I think your dh is being rather sweet.

flyingspaghettimonster · 16/03/2012 15:50

I think the sad thing about this is that i assumed it was a reverse Aibu as i cannot imagine a guy who actually sorts his own mothers day cards out. This year my Mil is in the UK alone doing her phd and i thought she would really appreciate being remembered on UK mothers day... By the time i managed to get the address from her husband, find a florist that had something more modern and less pink, asked Dhaka what message he wanted to go with... '...uh...' and paid for them myself, i think the sweet gesture from her two grown sons is a bit stretched! Grrr.

Anyhow, i think if it is a one off to announce the pregnancy it is adorable and should very encouraged so he remembers you in future years. And i always get a mothers day card for my nana. Some people are so special they should hear it every opportunity, hallmark or not...

OMGBFP · 16/03/2012 15:52

I saw one in Birthdays "...from the dog x"

Confused

BTW OP it's a fab way to tell people you are pregnant, we did the same thing with MIL and a Nanny birthday card last week, watching for the "penny to drop look on her face" moment was really special for us Grin congratulations Thanks

scarborough84 · 16/03/2012 16:38

Yes I agree its a lovely thing for dh to do. Guess its tinged with sadness as I am unable to do same for my own mum. Could do it for my siblings of course but not seeing them for another week.
Guess in general it just feels too commercial although agree its probably ok in some situations.
Thanks omgbfp
