After much thought, and lurking in Mooncup threads, i have finally ordered one online. Please reassure me it is as easy as some of you make out?

Takes a bit of getting used to but I have used mine for over 5 years now. There used to be a money back guarantee if you didn't get on with it not sure if that is still the case.

DorisIsWaiting · 16/03/2012 13:20

love mine now took a couple of months to be fully comfortable with it but now it's fab. I will be introducing my daughters to the concept when they are old enough.

DorisIsWaiting · 16/03/2012 13:20

Oh and the money I've saved just makes me Grin

LoonyRationalist · 16/03/2012 13:22

YANBU to be nervous, but try not to be. Was seriously one of the best decisions I have ever made.

Give it a little time and I'm certain you'll be a convert!

festiemum · 16/03/2012 13:22

Took me one cycle to get used to it, and it really is as marvellous as everyone says. Wish I'd started using them years ago! :)

Solo · 16/03/2012 13:24

I found it was perfect first time! they are so easy and convenient and let's not forget cheap!! Good luck, but you wont need it. :)

StealthPolarBear · 16/03/2012 13:24

Good luck :) took me a few days to get used to, but now it s easier than iserting a tampon and 1000x more comfortable

SmellsLikeTeenStrop · 16/03/2012 13:27

remember to cut off the dangly bit, otherwise it nips.

once you get used to them, they're brilliant, I could never go back to tampons, and you know, since I've switched I've never experienced that awful heavy my womb is about to fall out dragging feeling I used to get during my period. Coincidence?

StealthPolarBear · 16/03/2012 13:31

no not a coincidence, I used to get awful cramps oinly when I had a tampon in. Never used them when I didnt 'have' to as it wasnt there with a pad and not there with a mooncup.

My dangly bit is intact and does not nip though :o

ddubsgirl · 16/03/2012 13:31

daft question how do u use them?

StealthPolarBear · 16/03/2012 13:33

You fold it in half (so flatten it then fold in half) and then insert it. You don't put it anywhere near as high up as you would a tampon. TBH as long as mine is in and fully opened, it positions itself within a couple of mins - I don't need to worry about whetyher it's too high, too low

ddubsgirl · 16/03/2012 13:34

you empty it everyday i take it?i have heard of them but never looked into it,after having my kids i find i cant use tampons and fed up of flooding the towels

PigletUnrepentant · 16/03/2012 13:35

I'm sorry... I hated mine... the two of them...

StealthPolarBear · 16/03/2012 13:37

Piglet well that's the thing you're only meant to use one Wink :o

You empty it as often as you need to, which is usually less than you'd change a tampon. On day 1 and2 of my period I empty it every few hours. Mostly after that it's twice a day - in shower in the morning then before bed. So it basically means you don't need to think about having a period after about the first 2 days. Of course that depends on your period.
In the first 2 days I do wear a pad as well as I occasionally get a tiny bit of leaking.

ddubsgirl · 16/03/2012 13:42

lol

takeonboard · 16/03/2012 13:42

I am just not getting it, having trouble visualising it Blush
can anyone link to a picture of one !

StealthPolarBear · 16/03/2012 13:48

Just Google mooncup! It's a bit like a plastic flexible small eggcup (but without the base)

redexpat · 16/03/2012 13:49

www.mooncup.co.uk/about-the-mooncup.html

The first period with it was tricky to say the least, but then it just worked.

Which reminds me, now I've had a baby I have to order the next size up.

I've graduated! Smile

SmellsLikeTeenStrop · 16/03/2012 13:55

True story, it was a discussion on mumsnet that inspired and prompted me to get my first mooncup.

takeonboard · 16/03/2012 13:58

Thanks for the link red
I fit the criteria for size A definitely but (sorry TMI) and (not very good with the biology of my own body!) when I have a smear test there is a note on my notes to say only use the smallest size speculum as, well the others are too big. One nurse said I only use this size on Japanese ladies!
Does this mean I need size B? or is it just my cervix that is small..sorry I have no idea and I am 47 Blush

DonkeyTeapot · 16/03/2012 14:00

I wasn't sure about it at first, kept having to snip more of the stalk off, but once I'd chopped off almost the whole stalk it was brilliant. It's flexible silicone, so you fold it and insert it, and when you let go it springs back into shape. I normally have to poke it a couple of times to get it in position, but you can soon tell if it's not in place right. I empty miine every time I go to the loo, as it seems to shift when I go for a wee! (TMI?)

IsSamNormansDad · 16/03/2012 14:06

Thank you, just need to wait on it being delivered now. Quick question for all you experienced Mooncuppers (is that a word?) can I do the stem snipping bit between periods? Mine has just finished and want to have it sorted for the next one. TIA.
I feel more confident already Smile

Yeah - chop it off!

HSMM · 16/03/2012 14:31

Took me a few months to get used to mine and now I wouldn't be without it. Just remember to wet it before you insert it (much easier).

PigletUnrepentant · 16/03/2012 14:35

Sometimes it is difficult to break up the vacuum. Hence trying both sizes. First one was incredible difficult and painfull to remove, even when I followed the very caring and highly informative advice of the Mooncup Society in Mumsnet.

At the end, I went and bought a different size...

The next one came out in pieces, I ended up shopping the bottom off with scissors (while it was still on) as it was practically impossible to remove it other way.

I still think the things are great, but it's not that they suit the 100% of women population.
