To think that not everybody on here would know that a thread topic has been "done to death"

Warning - thread about thread(s). If you don't like, don't feel obliged to read.

I am no Newbie but definitely a lurker.

The thread about alleged "bullying" (their word not mine) got me thinking, particularly when I lurked on another.

Someone on here has got a bashing tonight for raising a topic that has been, I quote, "done to death".

AIBU in thinking that a newbie should not be expected to trail thousands of threads to see if the topic has been covered already? And even if it has, so what?

I raise this because while I don't necessarily agree that there is bullying on here, I do think that newbies are more often than not made to feel unwelcome - in fact the only place they can go with safety is the "Buddy Bench".

YANBU.

But this thread has been done before. Many times. Wink

NoDontLickThat · 15/03/2012 21:47

YANBU.

Moominsarescary · 15/03/2012 21:48

If your talking about the thread I think, the op is getting a bashing because she started a similar one yesterday

BareBums · 15/03/2012 21:49

I've seen lots of threads from newbies stating they are in fact a newbie and they get nothing but warm welcomes and great banter.
Maybe the poster wasn't aware the OP was new.
I've been on MN on and off for a couple years and whilst some posters love a bun fight the majority are brill!!

fatherchewylouis · 15/03/2012 21:51

I take your point, but the search function is easy to use so people should be able to find out easily.

No reason hy a newbie should miss out n a jolly good p&c parking row though so they hold go ahead and post a new thread anyway so the oldies can fill in their bingo cards.

Arachnophobic · 15/03/2012 21:52

Moomin no it's not that one, it's the one to do with SAHM/WOHM.

Whenever I see a comment along the lines of "this has been discussed before", I wonder if they go up to groups of men in a pub to say "football has already been discussed, so you can only talk about crown green bowls now" :)

SAHM v WOHM threads are boring though

ohbugrit · 15/03/2012 21:56

This really pisses me off too. Why the hell would or should a newcomer have to search previous threads to find out if a topic has been done before? Ffs just don't read threads you have seen covered before.

southeastastra · 15/03/2012 21:58

i remember starting an arsey thread on here years ago suggesting that mn should have a frequently answered question section Grin

usualsuspect · 15/03/2012 21:59

Now that sounds like a plan ,sea

Melusina · 15/03/2012 22:00

depends on the type of person you are.

do you just walk in a pub or into work and start calling the shots, or do you sit back for a while to get a feel for the place, then dive in?

me, sit back feel the place then dive in - much safer :)

undercoverPrincess · 15/03/2012 22:01

YANBU
If you're bored of a subject don't bother reading / posting....

usualsuspect · 15/03/2012 22:05

But then there would be no threads left to post on Grin

exoticfruits · 15/03/2012 22:08

They are all done to death. I don't know how anyone is expected to know it!

Ones that crop up anew every few months are:

The parent with a DC starting school who is upset by collective worship-they didn't realise that there are no secular schools in England.

People who want their carpets pristine and don't want shoes on them.

People who want their DCs in a hygienic, sterile bubble and don't want anyone touching them.

People who think it illegal to leave an 8yr old at home for 10 minutes.

People who think that everyone in their party should queue up in a restaurant instead of doing the sensible thing and one person queuing while the rest sit down.

People who get upset about the school's 'policing'of lunch boxes.

People upset because a birthday DC takes sweets into school for everyone.

There are many, many more-all done to death BUT they are new to the person who starts them. They haven't read it before and it is new to them. Probably if you think it has been done to death you should just leave them to it-they have just as much right.

Melusina · 15/03/2012 22:10

Wouldn't it be great to find something that has never been discussed?

randomrandomrandom · 15/03/2012 22:10

People who have smelly washing machines

People who want to grow veg

People who want to grow flowers in a shady spot

People who want to cook stuff

randomrandomrandom · 15/03/2012 22:11

People who have to decide which food mixer to buy

People who are selling stuff on ebay

People who wonder how to pass the 11 plus

fossil97 · 15/03/2012 22:12

Another forum I look at has a section for "Dead Horses"....

cornsilkidy · 15/03/2012 22:13

telling people to search the archives is rude. I can't be arsed to do that.

randomrandomrandom · 15/03/2012 22:13

Good idea

People who want to buy horses

People who want to control dogs (some hope)

People who want to control teenagers

People who want to control men

AdventureInKL · 15/03/2012 22:14

How about a thread about the best type of gravy granules to be dissolved in jelly?

Birdsgottafly · 15/03/2012 22:24

OP be thankful, when i first joined MN, the majority of the threads was about baby led weaning, or at least it felt like it.

You couldn't post something without someone wanting a link, which couldn't be done because the research was only published in academic text and not wilki.

YANBU, opinions change and hopefully some posters are becoming more knowledgable, thanks to some of the threads.
