to think this was really unprofessional?!

I recently went to one of those post natal baby groups. It was lead by a health visitor and a early years practitioner. I was having a nice time and both the leaders seemed nice. However the practitioner kept referring everything back to her own children which did get quite annoying. All the other mums were first time mums so I tried not to talk about my older dc as thought it wasn't appropriate.

Then one of the mums started talking about tax credits and how she wasn't entitled, the other mums joined in too. The practitioner then said something about how it makes her sick that benefit scroungers get loads of benefits. Then she says you should not be entitled unless you have paid in. Fair enough that's her opinion but what if one of the mums had been on benefits?

She then says that people coming into this country shouldn't get anything until they have been here a year and worked a year. Again her opinion but unprofessional no? Its put me off going back. I wanted to meet other mums not getting into benefit and immigrant bashing and setting the world to rights!

She also lives locally and her dcs go to my kids school if she is unprofessional I'd be concerned she wouldn't keep things discussed in the group confidential.

I just thought that as a Health visitor she would be aware that people who are not white can still be from this country!

Agree, that is pretty ignorant. And LOL at Poo. How many times have you been asked about your ethnic history? I've never been asked about mine :(

PooPooInMyToes · 16/03/2012 08:31

Buttery. But its still clear what she meant. You KNEW what she meant, you chose to pretend you didn't because of said chip.

ButteryBiscuitBase · 16/03/2012 09:14

I didn't pretend anything! The scenario was I was at a group with my dd, there were about 8 other mums and babies. She asked us to introduce our names and our babies. At my turn after I'd said our names she said "and what country does this little ones daddy come from?" Maybe it was the way it was said or the fact she didn't ask anyone else anything additional but to me it just seemed a bit random and wrongly worded.

(Slopes off to look in full length mirror to check for shoulder chips!)

"... a early years practitioner ..."

That is not a profession, simply an occupation.

Behaving "unprofessionally" is a phrase much misused to describe almost any perceived misconduct by, or poor service from someone providing a service.

RitaMorgan · 16/03/2012 10:09

"But its still clear what she meant."

Yes, what she meant was "as your baby isn't white they must be a bit foreign". That's quite an ignorant thing to ask someone!

Rhinosaurus · 16/03/2012 10:18

She is unprofessional in making the session about her own children, also in talking in a discriminatory way, she is entitled to her views however she should not be using work based activities to air them in.

You should report her, sunds like she needs to have a training update.....

WibblyBibble · 16/03/2012 13:11

Sorry but you should report her immediately and not go back until she is sacked. Hate speech towards people on benefits is no different from racist, religious, gender or disability hate-speech.

"... Sorry but you should report her immediately and not go back until she is sacked ..."

Highly unlikely.
