AIBU to expect school lunch bags to be stored away from heat?

Apologies - I realise this could technically go on another board, but I want to deal with this today as it's my only day off for a long while.

DD (6) has a lunch bag every day. Standard stuff of healthy fodder. Too many times now though, she's returned with half drunk water/juice, jelly pot that's liquefied, warm yogurts etc. When I ask her why she's not eating it all, she tells me that it's all yuck and warm (and melted) by lunch time.

Que me buying a little freezer cool pack, but even that's liquefied and useless. Apparently, her coat and bag are above the old school radiator which is blasting in the winter. I sometimes packed shredded cooked chicken Shock and crackers and cheese for her lunch bag.

This ain't healthy is it? Not a great idea to store lunchbags near heat surely? Or am I being a tad precious.

I'm open for all your input.

Our lunch boxes go on a trolley outside the class room
Do yours stay on the peg?

LittleEsmeWeatherwax · 15/03/2012 08:24

Yes, hung on a peg with the coat on the upper peg. I'm going to double check this morning.

our childrens lunchbags are stored on a trolley in the hall and then wheeled along to the dinner hall before lunchtime

I think this needs raising with the school as a health issue. The lunch boxes should be on a table/trolley well away from direct heat sources. One day someone will become ill if they don't change this.

Yanbu

Just checked now when I dropped her off. THere's a long wall to wall radiator underneath all the jackets. Lovely idea for the coats and jackets but a pretty awful oversight with regards to food storage.

We've had LOTS and I mean lots of sickness in this school....

jumping to huge conclusion perhaps

Yanbu. We were getting hot lunches when the pegs were moved to a new corridor with big windows that faced south. School provided a trolley for all lunch boxes and bags which was then stored for the morning in a cool gloomy corner. Simple solution - raise it with school, they should be happy to help.

Yanbu. I was hospitalised as a child with food poisoning. After investigation it turned out that my lunch box had been stored in front of a massive floor length window in the Height of summer.

Bramshott · 15/03/2012 09:24

At the DDs school the PTA contributed for 2 lunch trolleys to store the lunchboxes (they are stored in a corridor which is pretty cool) on and then wheel them over to the hall. I seem to remember they were about £100 each.

yanbu. raise it with the school imediately and swap her onto school dinners til it's sorted
