Neighbours & rubbish. Would I be unreasonable?

Minor issue..

We live in a 6 flat building in a terrace of similar properties. Every week we have about triple the no. of black sacks (about 20) piled up outside our door. They are there for up to 24hrs and with recycling etc also, it's pretty unsightly.

Other residents in our building have said they have seen people adding bags to our pile, but couldn't say who, and our elderly upstairs resident has been quite upset about the amount of rubbish. She still washes the front step weekly and wants the place to look nice... Anyway, this morning I saw one of our neighbours dumping all their black bags onto ours.

Am I being petty, or is this just odd and actually not on?

I'd like to write next door a note asking them to stop, or at least come and ask us if this is OK. Would I be unreasonable?

No YANBU, that would really piss me off too, I would have a word rather than leave a note though

Yanbu

Phew, thank you. It is weird isn't it?
Think a note might be best as it's a multiple occupancy building so wouldn't know whose bell to press, or be confident they would pass the message on.
If they don't stop I'm going to suggest we alternate weeks Grin

YANBU, I hate this too.

If you know where they live go and put it back outside their house. If it really is a problem speak to the council, they can fine them for dumping rubbish and will look through the bags to find a name and address.

At least round our way they do.

We had a neighbour that kept putting his rubbish with ours, we are a business and paid for our collections daily rather than having council collections. Once I worked out who it was he soon got the message when I kept returning his bag of rubbish to his doorstep each morning.

Thank you, wherearemysocks - dumping it back at theirs will definitely be phase 2!

thing is though, the bin men often come along on the morning in advance of the lorry and gather all the bags in one stretch into one heap (or they did where I used to live). Sometimes that would be outside our house, sometimes not. If its 24 hrs before though that's not on. If you see them, can you not pop out and ask them not to? Or stick a note up / through their door maybe? We had bin issues with a neighbour once before and its the sort of thing that can escalate if you don't address it calmly and ideally in person.

I used to live in a place where the whole cul-de-sac used to dump their rubbish on the corner, right outside my house. One day, I just picked it all up and re dumped it outside all of their doors. I kept doing it, every week until they took the hint. I did bump into one neighbour and pointed out that I did not want their rubbish outside my front door, when they had perfectly good pavements outside their own houses.

So if I was you, I'd definitely start redistributing it.

pinksky · 15/03/2012 07:52

You're right Trixie, that does happen but not on our street - our bedroom is at the front and we'd hear them, plus it's only our house with lots of rubbish and neighbours with none (ie, everyone else has the 'expected' no of bags outside their buildings).
I was going to race down today but was in my PJs, and we are a few floors up. Could have yelled from the window I suppose!

I've drafted a polite but firm note asking them to refrain, or at least come and discuss it with us. Certainly wouldn't want it escalating.

Thank you all
