to think MN would work better if more people used Active Conversations to navigate around?

From previous threads, I think that about half of us use the Active Button to find new threads and about the other half use the Topics functionality to see what's going on.

The problem with the Topics methodology is that some topics are very popular, and everything gets bunged into them. AIBU is the case in point. Because there's lots of traffic in AIBU, if someone wants a quick answer they post something like: "AIBU to ask you to recommend me a good highchair" hoping that all the people who hang out in AIBU will answer them. And then Trills the rest of us who aren't interested in a highchairs, but are interested in whether or not someone is unreasonable will get upset.

Conversely some sections are severely neglected, like WWYD (What Would You Do) - a space presumably designed to to the job of AIBU but in a less bun-fighty way. But it's like a bloody morgue in there - I once posted something in there and struggled to get a response. So the next time I had a WWYD, I came back to AIBU and had a bumfight instead.

The Solution? Put things in the right place and use Active to see what's going on.

Now here's the clever bit... What about all those high chair questions, I hear you say? They're going to come up on Active Convos and annoy me there instead. Well you just need to go to Customise and at the bottom there is the option to ignore topics in the Active Conversations. It's quite a small link so you might need to look hard. And then you can hide the highchairs and all the other bits of MN you aren't interested in. It only takes a couple of minutes and you need never be bothered with highchair talk again unless you want to be.

There's a serendipity factor in the Active Convos approach too. You might come interesting threads that you would have missed by sticking exclusively to one or two topics like AIBU and Chat.

Obviously this approach won't work for those who exclusively use MN for one or two specialist subjects, and I do know a lot of us do it already.

AIBU? Grin

I think a lot of the bumfight [sic] on AIBU is because one are setting oneself up for being judged, not because the using this board are particularly fighty. The very act of asking if other people think you are unreasonable is always going to be provocative.

This board is great because it is universally understood that you're going to get it told to you straight which is why I think an AIBU/WWYD hybrid would work, so one can post true WWYDs and get frank responses without having to shoehorn in an AIBU twist. Its these ill-concieved 'twists' that get peoples hackles up IMO.

ViviPru · 14/03/2012 16:03

urgh *one is setting oneself up Hmm

WorraLiberty · 14/03/2012 16:04

Fucking hell, there's a topic that tells us when our periods have started? Shock

Mind you, it wouldn't surprise me....

ViviPru · 14/03/2012 16:05

I liked it when we did the philanthropic Answer An Unanswered Thread marathon. That was you wasn't it, Mardy IIRC?

Debsbear · 14/03/2012 16:06

You mean there's more to mn than AIBU?? Really? Wink

MardyBra · 14/03/2012 16:08

Not if you're worra Debsbear. Wink back.

Yes I was involved ViviPru.

I thought you were the punking instigator Mardy. My memory is shot

MorrisZapp · 14/03/2012 16:11

Ok, so I got as far as customise. It said I could hide topics by clicking a link but once clicked all I got was the special needs opt-in.

Help, how do I actually hide topics?

Am on mobile site. Android phone so no app... Grrr.

BrianCoxHasScaryHair · 14/03/2012 16:11

When I first came to MN just over a year ago, I couldn't keep up with Active Convos (or was it 'last 15 minutes') It was all too fast and as I wasn't familiar with the site it swamped me.

I would go to Topics and have 3 or 4 I'd go to and plod along nicely.

Since coming back to MN, after a lot of lurking, I'm much more site-savvy and only use Active Convos and I'm On. I have hidden about 90% of topics and have mainly Chat and AIBU (oh and the pet topics...)

Now I know the 'easy' way to use the site, I would never go back to using Topics.

Maybe MN could be just ACTIVE CONVO'S and then if you want to look for a topic you do a 'search' with the topic name?

Hmm
TOTU · 14/03/2012 16:11

There's too many topics overall on Mumsnet. It needs a good culling.

Some people (like myself) will post in Chat so their post goes away in 90 days or because they want more responses.

OP, I can see what you're saying, but I don't think many people will change how and where they post.

BoulevardOfBrokenSleep · 14/03/2012 16:16

I always navigate by Active Convos, but you do miss a lot doing that cause it all moves so quickly...

Have just refreshed mine, and it only covers threads that have been posted on in the last 12 minutes. And I think I have it set to as long as it will go (100 threads IIRC)

lesley33 · 14/03/2012 16:16

I agree that getting rid of loads of the topics would make things much much better. It just creates dead areas where few people post and so people end up posting in aibu or chat for the traffic.

I only discovered I'm On last week, and it has revelotionised my mn experience. Suddenly understand how people can reply so quickly to posts in a number of threads.

ExitPursuedByABear · 14/03/2012 16:20

Excuse me - we have a lovely Outdoorsy Shite Top trumps thread running in the 2010 World Cup topic at the moment - I did query its location but I think it was done in an attempt to point out to MNHQ that we need an outdoorsy shite topic as a stand alone.

We have basking sharks and all sorts of fab stuff.

amillionyears · 14/03/2012 16:22

Can someone tell me where the property/diy conversations end up to please?
I cant find them in the shortcuts section.

BrianCoxHasScaryHair · 14/03/2012 16:23

Why is there a 2010 World Cup Topic???

Why???

Shock
FunnysInTheGarden · 14/03/2012 16:27

wow, how could you keep up with anything without using 'threads I'm on'. I use that and active convos mostly, sometimes a topic if I'm after specific info or search. How do other folk MN?

MardyBra · 14/03/2012 16:41

Vivi - I instigated one thread and joined in on another. Smile

WorraLiberty · 14/03/2012 16:45

I use 'threads I'm on'...but if I used active too then I'd have too many 'threads I'm on' to catch up on.

That's why I'd lose interest in them all Grin

Sorry amillionyears I don't know...but someone else might be able to help you.

WorraLiberty · 14/03/2012 16:45

Bugger! X posted

MardyBra · 14/03/2012 16:46

Bloody hell. Just clicked on World Cup Topic (had previously had it hidden). There are squatters! Shock

OP posts:
frankie3 · 14/03/2012 16:46

Yes there are too many topics. Like in health the first topic that comes up is swine flu!

MardyBra · 14/03/2012 16:51

There is a wine topic which, surprisingly, doesn't get used much.
