Was walking to school yesterday, wheeling my bike, DS on the back of it, DD next to it. Got close to the school where idiots inconsiderate parents park on the solid white lines (i.e. where you're not supposed to park) half up on the pavement leaving very little space to get through. Happily walking and chatting when a back door of a car swings open right into me, knocking my arm hard, my bike sideways and me into DD who falls in to the fence next to the road. Luckily my friend is right behind so she grabs the bike and stops it from falling over too.

Now obviously I'm not going to blame the 5 year-old who opened the door (she's in DD's year). But as I'm now left with a mahoosive bruise on my arm that is even making my shoulder painful I ask myself these questions:

  • why do people park on solid white lines next to the school? Is it so hard to walk 100 extra yards?
  • why do they park half on the pavement (there is a reason for the lines i.e. the road is too bloody narrow for parking)?
  • why is the child's door not child-locked?

Child was with her granny who just stared at me for a while, then finally said, 'oh, are you all right?' No word of sorry.

Idiots. Vent over.

YANBU, obviously.

Evidently, the rules don't apply to everyone.

I advocate a bit of a 'rules are made for fools to follow and wise men to interpret' approach. But you need to understand why the rules exist before you can 'interpret' them.

Some people are just idiots.

GravyAndALumpyMashBaby · 14/03/2012 12:59

Did you take her reg to report her? (I don't know to who though?!)
Hope your DD was ok.

I hate people like this. Angry

MissM · 14/03/2012 14:37

I didn't Gravy, and you're right - who would I report her to? I could ask the HT to remind people not to park on the white lines, but he does so in the weekly newsletter about once a month and people take no notice whatsoever.

I'm just glad it was me who was on the side by the car and not DD. If it had been her the door would have hit her smack in the face (she's a wee little thing).

Lucky it wasn't me this happened to - I would have had a complete shit fit.

MissM · 14/03/2012 14:44

To be honest Callisto I was a bit in shock - my arm really hurt and I was stunned that the grandmother was completely ignoring what had happened. I also had three kids with me, there was another kid in the car, and others all around, and I didn't want to lose the plot in front of them all.

Still seething with anger (and pain) today tho, especially as the car was parked in exactly the same place this morning!

SaraBellumHertz · 14/03/2012 14:45

Apart from the q as to why the door isn't child lockefd, YANBU. Hope you're ok.

SaraBellumHertz · 14/03/2012 14:47

As to who to report it to , I would certainly mention it to the school.

Although TBH if I'd seen the car there for a second time I would have calmly challenged her, pointing out you had been injured as a result of their selfishness.

Jux · 14/03/2012 14:52

Parking got so bad around the local primary here, and despite lots of yellow lines and white lines, weekly reminders etc etc etc, not a bit of notice was taken. Then suddenly the Community Policeman appeared every morning from 8.15 until 9ish and lo! problem disappeared!

Do you have a Community PC you could ask?

MissM · 14/03/2012 14:55

Now there's a thought Jux. I am going to mention it to the head today - and yes Sara, I should have quietly challenged the woman. Trouble is, today the mother delivered her daughter not the grandmother. The trouble with people like that is they just don't care really.

OP posts:
Jux · 15/03/2012 09:25

Good luck. I think a lot of people here complained to the police and to the Town Council rather than bothering with the HT as she was not liked at all (still isn't).

fussbucket · 15/03/2012 09:37

At preschool the local Traffic Warden took to wandering along at morning rush time, the entitled 4x4 owners soon took to parking safely a whole 50 yards away, but didn't arf bang on about it in the playground!

JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 15/03/2012 09:40

I would contact your local police station, tell them of the incident and ask if there is someone who can pop down at school drop off/collection times?

captainmummy · 15/03/2012 09:45

Our lollipop lady used to take the reg of anyone parkingon the zigzags at our school, and they would get a 'letter' (Ooooh!)

Didn't stopmost of the inconsiderate bastards.

The council even suspended ticket-payments at the local carpark (5 mins down the road) between 830-9 am but no-one used it.

ABigGirlDoneItAndRanAway · 15/03/2012 11:42

I would be very tempted to "accidentally" scratch this car with the bike if I saw it parked on the pavement again, they don't have much cause for complaint if they shouldn't be parked there.

Mrsjay · 15/03/2012 11:43

They park on these lines because they cant get to the classroom door in cars Grin and i mightve scratched the car with my bike next time ,

MissM · 15/03/2012 17:27

If only we had a lollipop lady! Didn't even have one before the cuts. When DS is on the back of my bike it's can get off-balance if I don't hold on to it tight enough. So a scratch might be an inevitable possibility...

What I don't get is that it's not as if it's hard to park close to the school. There's loads of parking - it's just 20 yards away (not even as far as 50 yards fuss bucket).

Miss M i live near a primary school with loads of round about parking and still they park where they like its fustrating , I scratched a car accidently years ago trying to get into school with a buggy , was their own bloody fault , I did see the owner tut as she went back in it , I didnt own up it was me Blush

Mrsjay · 15/03/2012 17:30

loads of parking round about * does that make any more sense Grin

MissM · 15/03/2012 17:38

I always feel for the people who live near the school. They must hate the parents so much!

OP posts:
Mrsjay · 15/03/2012 17:40

we Dont hate the parents we dont like the silly parking , does anybody really need to park on a pavement near a gate just a few yards closer ,

OriginalJamie · 15/03/2012 17:40

They do this because only their child or their convenience is important to them. Selfish people don't become unselfish when they have children
