to think "SAHMs lack gumption" is not a good argument for major tax policy....

According to Nigel Lawson, he as Chancellor wanted to introduce a transferable tax allowance between married couples, not the cursory £750 giving you a pound or so a week that Cameron is talking about, but the full allowance transferred. He said "Margaret would not let him, because she thought women who stayed at home with the children lacked gumption".

Basically Thatcher thought all women should aspire to be like her, and therefore major tax policy was crafted because of this!!!!

I was Shock when I heard him say this!!!!

I have so little gumption that I just don't care what someone may or may not have said 30 years ago. Even up to date gossip is boring lately Confused Has Lawson written a new book or something that he needs to sell? why on earth is he bringing this up now? or is it just that MT can no longer speak out on her own behalf so everyone can say what they like and attribute it to her with impugnity?

Someone has to raise the kids!

catgirl1976 · 14/03/2012 11:04

Yes well, she's not known for what she did to help women is she? Or manual workers, or northeners, or the vulnerable, or..............well it's a long list

LilyBolero · 14/03/2012 11:04

It's because he is authoring a report looking at how the government treats families.

But families do not necessarily have two resident parents...

TheCrackFox · 14/03/2012 11:16

Maggie thatcher (although incredibly well educated) married a millionaire who paid for a nanny whilst she spent years trying to get her political career off the ground.

Maybe Maggie thought all SAHMs should have married better?

kerala · 14/03/2012 11:29

Is this the Nigel Lawson of climate change does not exist hurumph hurumph fame?

Also for all the things that were admirable about MT (not that I admire being the other end of the political spectrum but anyway) the way she ran her family is not one of them. Her childen...well I won't say anymore but you all know what I mean.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 14/03/2012 12:25

It should be nothing to do with whether you are a parent or not, a couple should be taxed as a single entity.

After all, household income is the one which is used to calculate any benefits.

LizzieMo · 14/03/2012 12:29

Maggie did not seem very interested in her kids though. They were brought up by nannies. Now that she is old, they rarely visit her. She had so much gumption she is alone in her old age.

Walkinginwonderland · 14/03/2012 12:53

That's because she was an antifeminist arsehole.

fedupofnamechanging · 14/03/2012 12:56

Karma bit her on the arse with Mark though Grin

zumm · 14/03/2012 12:59

Maggies kids reportedly didn't esp like their mother. Nuff said.
