To Be Sick To Death Of Bloody Headlice!

My daughter is halfway through year one. She has had headlice an obscene amount of times. The longest she's gone without catching them again is 8 weeks. The school (so they say) aren't allowed to talk about it. Human rights and all that bollocks. It isn't just in her year, because every parent is complaining about it. I moaned at them yesterday and they said I was the second to complain just that day, but there is nothing they can do. They may see if they can send a letter out, maybe before the end of term. Maybe. But they can't victimise anyone. Can I? Can I randomly start grabbing kids hair, then screaming at parents? (Okay I know I can't, but I really want too!). Can I make signs and display them around the school? Can I shout at the top of my lungs 'WHICH LAZY FUCKING PARENT IS IT????!!!!' And what the frig happened to the nit nurse? My daughter is having so much time off school so I can treat her. AAAAGGGGGH! Rant over! Thank you :-) xxx

On friday dd1's teacher called me over and explained dd had visitors lol..she had seen one earlier in the day :( I appreciated her telling me and we dealt with the bastards that night. I felt no shame in her telling me at all...at least we could deal with it as I hadn't noticed x

Can you only get the nitty gritty online??? My DD had them last week and although she seems clear now it was a nightmare. The normal combs that I have and the ones you get in the Full marks box just dont do it for her. Her hair is fine but she has lots of it. It took me hours and hours to get all the eggs or nits. I am still scratching. Hate the bastards.

I think Lloyds pharmacy may do them, though they're cheaper online. I've heard that you can get them from some doctors now aswell.

Get the nitty comb from boots

dottygirl1 · 23/04/2012 20:34

Thanks for that.

The worst part is that I would love someone to check my hair but dont have anyone to do it. We moved last year and dont know anyone well enough to ask them to inspect my head for nits!!! DH looked but said that I am as clean as a whistle after looking for about 2 seconds. I have done my own hair with the Full marks (twice) and have fine combed it alot but still feels itchy. Might be all in my mind at this stage. DD is defo free of everything at the moment.

Careful with the ivermectin. It is used in the US for this indication (based funnily enough on studies done in the UK) but the dosing is weight based and different for different children. It's also not one pill- it's one pill then repeated a couple of times- can't remember right now but you could google the article. Tried it with my DD (4 solid months of infestation!!) and it didn't work!!! Can't comb her hair effectively- too thick and curly. Finally went with 3 solid days of hair drying then repeat every week for three weeks- we are finally lice free (for 6 months!)

Harleyband · 23/04/2012 20:53

P.S. Ivermectin is NOT approved in the US for lice. It's approved for other parastitic infections. Once a medicine is approved by the FDA physicians can use it for whatever they like hence it's limited use in the US for lice.

We 'invited' a couple of kids to play....... crawling with nits.... I text their mums oh i found nits in DD's hair do you want me to do your girls as well ..... then had them to play again a week later (for second treatment) as i already had the stuff...

It worked DD hasn't had nits since first week of term... We broke the cycle ;)

My DD told me that one of boys in her class is wearing a bandana all the time now because his mother told the teacher that she is sick of the amount of times he has got lice this year.

I think it just mustnt bother some people as we must get letters every 2 weeks in my DD class.

MissLofPubia · 25/04/2012 13:59

A bandana is a good idea! May try it x

I recommend googling "The Lice Program": a 21 day program of combing/ resting which is based on the lice life cycle: eggs/ nymphs/ adults, etc. It makes total sense and gives you the reasoning and explanation about what is going on every day. Takes the randomness out of combing so you only do it on crucial days in the program.

Based on 3 years of studying exactly what is going on with the critters and when they lay eggs, hatch, mature, etc. So there is stuff going on at all these stages on the person's head at any one time. It will take 21 days to be clear of all the events in the cycle.
