AIBU to not want to pay £90 for haircare products?

Long story but after a dodgy home colour and a number of remedial trips to the salon at no small expense my hair is not the colour I would like it to be.

Apparently if I use the recommended products I may sometime I may sometime in the future be able to have highlights. Unfortunately the recommended products come to £90!!!

Who can actually afford to spend this ON THEIR HAIR? AIBU to think salons need to get real and to have burst into tears on leaving without the products and with the feeling it is all my fault I have shit hair?

How bad is your hair?

Get yourself a nice big bottle of generic Argan oil, and sleep with it slathered in your hair twice a week for a couple of weeks.

Then visit a different hairdresser and have the highlights. If you end up with some cotton wool ends (sort of frizzy frazzled ends) then have an inch off.

Job done.

YY to the oily hair

Also Primani has a hair wrapper-upper thingy for a couple of quid that keeps the oil off your naice pillowcases. DH says I look like a smurf in my blue one but who cares when my mop is beyoodiful the next day.

It's not really the salons fault that you messed up your hair, or how much the Products cost. They make some profit of course, but then that's what they are there for.

Have you got a Sally's in your area? You might be able to get the same or simelar products there cheaper.

Can you not cover it up with a slightly deeper colour? Obviously I don't know how it ended up, but a nice chestnut brown would cover up most green/orange/red issues, no?

Zingzillarilla · 13/03/2012 23:14

£90 is excessive for hair products. Hair salons will often try to guilt trip you into buying their overprice products basically saying you will have shit hair for ever more if you don't. I would just buy some deep conditioning treatments, the Aussie ones are good and they smell delish. And then visit a different salon; I've had loads of colours on my hair, I had highlights just a few days ago over the top of a colour I'd done myself at home but didn't particularly like and I didn't have to use any particular products beforehand.

This stuff is absolutely amazing for repairing damaged hair and you only need to use a little bit each time so it lasts for ages.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 14/03/2012 06:58

What products are they trying to sell you ?

Icelollycraving · 14/03/2012 08:38

No one is forcing you to buy them are they?! What exactly is the problem with the hair,is it brittle?

valiumredhead · 14/03/2012 08:47

Look on Cheapsmells website for the products - the salon prices are massively over priced.

Think I remember your colouring disaster thread.

Does your hair look ok even if not tge actual colour you want? It won't be longer before you can do what you want with it again.

sunshineandbooks · 14/03/2012 09:05

I thought there were various colour removers out there (not bleaches) that could strip the unwanted colour away. I don't know enough about it, but I'm sure if you posted in S&B someone there would be able to recommend a good one. A couple of weeks using good-quality restorative products and you should be free to go whatever colour you choose again. Good luck.

When I was in my early 20s I tried a home perm that didn't appear to do anything after the recommended 20 mins so I left it on for an extra 15 and ended up having to have most of my hair cut off to within an inch of my scalp. I developed a bohemian style involving lots of headscarves that year. Grin

If it is really damaged buy yourself a tub of Frederick Fekkai protein hair mask. It works wonders, pushing protein into the hair.
