Dd will be 8 next month. I have always dressed her fashionably but age appropriately. I hate a lot of girls clothes that's about as its too grown up ( sequins, spaghetti straps, crop tops etc) However for her birthday top of the list is some clogs with heels! I don't really like seeing little girls in heels and have always tell her no when she asks about them. She has lots of other nice shoes that are trendy and practical. She insists she would only wear them for special occasions parties etcb she is being very persuasive!

Her best friend has a pair. In the past dd has struggled to make friends and this new friend is a really nice little girl and I'm pleased they have become friends as my dd was being picked on by a couple of girls in her previous circle of friends. I think dd wants to be the same as her friend and I can totally relate to that feeling.

Should I give in and get her them?

Don't think that 'practical' is really what an 8 yr old desires in a pair of shoes :(
Tap shoes have a heel, how high are we talking?

Theas18 · 13/03/2012 17:20

When you say " clogs with heels" do you mean something along the lines of what I believe are called "flatforms" now- a flattish shoe with a platform sole?

If so I'd say yes, and I'm a cautious parent in these matters! In fact. At 9, nearly 10yrs ago my eldest had something very similar as her first " high shoes" for parties and posh.

They aren't the slippery slope to full on " big far gypsy wedding" style dissing honest!

Sorry, but heels on an 8yrold is a bit gross, dress up clothes at home is fine but not for parties-how can they run around?
I appreciate the friends thing, but get her some uggs or converse if you're that bothered!(I have ethical issues with that, but a t least she won't hurt herself)

Theas18 · 13/03/2012 17:22

Remember - 8.30-4 five days a week she's in school shoes anyway !

squeakytoy · 13/03/2012 17:24

She insists she would only wear them for special occasions parties

Umm, she is 8.. it is up to YOU to dictate when she can wear them anyway!!

I would say it depends on the height of the heel, anything more than 1.5" would be too high for a young girl in my opinion.

They are a clog mule style shoe, they look just like mini version of an adult shoe. They were really fashionable last summer ( maybe I should tell dd they are sooo last season to put her off!)

Dd does ballet and takes it v seriously!, I might point out she could damage her foot if she were to fall and hope she changes her mind!

Thanks for replies! She actually has got a pair of gold flamenco shoes with a little heel that she persuaded grandpa to part with 50 euros for on holiday, but she has heart set on these clogs!

As a child my dad bought me pretty much any fashion item I wanted much to my mums annoyance. I remember how much I loved having what all the older popular girls had and my friends who weren't allowed being envious.

I also remember what a spoilt diva I was as a teen! I had spice girl boots and also some disgusting cherry coloured Rockports which were some bizarre local craze when I was 14!

clogs up to 1.5" tall for parties only don't bother me.
That said, I've kept DD (y5) to Primark specials strappy little flat sandal flipflops with lots of rhinestones.
