to feed kids my "special" bolognese?

Had friends over last night so made what I thought to be an inoffensive bolognese.

When my friend discovered I used Wine in the recipe she went MAD, saying how harmful it was to DCs.

Ended up giving her DDs cheese on toast, which is fine, she can feed them how she likes. But is she right- is it harmful?

I would ask DS but he has a hangover and won't speak to me Wink (joke! before anyone starts!)

Your friends a loon, the alcohol burns up when it's being heated.

Think I'd have asked her to leave tbh.

CailinDana · 13/03/2012 09:55

Your friend is an utter loony. A bit of alcohol mixed in with food will do absolutely no harm whatsoever. How old are her DCs out of interest?

SoozyWoozy · 13/03/2012 09:56

Rubbish. All of the alcohol content evaporates during the cooking process and so wouldn't affect the children. I wouldn't use it regularly (waste of good wine haha!) but a one off won't matter.

YANBU.

SpottyTeacakes · 13/03/2012 09:56

Yeah the alcohol gets cooked out your friend is being ridiculous

ariadne1 · 13/03/2012 09:56

Alcohol evaporates at a lower temeperature than water. It disappears in the cooking process

Florabeebaby · 13/03/2012 09:56

I always assumed the alcohol burns away. Just leaves a nice taste behind.

She sounds a bit...

maternallyyours · 13/03/2012 09:56

Bet it was luvverly....

nobutyeahbut · 13/03/2012 09:56

YANBU - your friend sounds mad!

milkysmum · 13/03/2012 09:57

I would put a splash of wine in cooking and my dd is 3. alcohol will evaporate when cooking.

Pastabee · 13/03/2012 09:58

YANBU. Alcohol burns off.

MamaGeekChic · 13/03/2012 09:58

I cook with wine, quite a lot of red in my bolognese, and I feed it to my 10mo DD... your friend is nuts!

choppychopster · 13/03/2012 10:00

YANBU. Spag bol with red wine is delicious.

5yo DD will be having beef in guiness stew for tea. Should I make sure that I get sone Calpol in for her hangover?

As everyone has said, your friend is a loon

and a bad cook

QuintessentialyHollow · 13/03/2012 10:02

Your friend is ignorant and rude.

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 13/03/2012 10:02

Yanbu if the alcohol content was even remotely a chance then you would get id'd buying red wine and herbs flavor ragu pasta sauce. Enjoy!!!! It burns off in cooking no one gets pulled over for drunk driving on risotto fgs :o

ripsishere · 13/03/2012 10:04

choppy, that will stress her already under attack from alcohol liver. Best go with nurofen Grin
OP, your friend is either a loon or a methodist (fingers crossed they are the ones who don't drink)

fishandlilacs · 13/03/2012 10:04

homecooking.about.com/library/archive/blalcohol12.htm

Not all alcohol burns off during cooking-it's a bit of a myth. However I doubt the amounts that remain are of any danger to anyone.

My dd is 4, I have always fed her bolognese and I have always sploshed a good dollop of wine in it.

SunSoakedStone · 13/03/2012 10:04

I'm glad, my DS ate quite a lot...

They are 5 and 2. She is quite odd with most aspects of health and safety though. I remember her youngest eating jars of puree at DSs 1st birthday and she is older than him.

maternallyyours it was!

That is how you get the buggers to sleep !!

Dawndonna · 13/03/2012 10:07

Sod your mate, I'll come over for dinner and won't complain about the food!
My dcs have been having alcofrol in food since tiny babies, gammon in cider, beef and red wine pies, beef and beer stew, and yes, red wine in chilli/spag bol. They're none the worse for wear at 27, 17 and 15. She's a silly mare!

switchtvoffdosomelessboring · 13/03/2012 10:08

I totally agree with your friend.

Its a slippery slope. Today your DS is eating spag bol with wine in it, tomorrow he'll be drinking straight whisky in a sippy cup.

CogitoErgoSometimes · 13/03/2012 10:09

"She is quite odd with most aspects of health and safety though".

Some ignorant people suffer from low-level paranoia & get the wrong end of the stick too easily. With so many conflicting magazine and internet articles to go at, they're quickly confused. Very rude to make a fuss about your bolognese sauce. The poor kid eating cheese on toast..... doesn't your friend know about lactose intolerance and wheat allergies??!!! Wink

Dillydollydaydream · 13/03/2012 10:10

I can't see the problem I often if I haven't ready drunk it all put red wine in my Spag Bol sauce.
