To wonder when Mother's Day became so bloody pink?

Every card in Tesco is frigging pink. So are the boxes of chocolates, socks, mugs and the rest of it. A sea of pink.

There's been enough talk over the last few years of the 'pinkification' of little girls, now it seems to be all females.

There are lots of europeans in the uk though, squeky, and plenty of uk born mama's too. Its not like I'm expecting to find mutti or maman on cards.......

At least the Ocado section for mothers day links to a choice of 26 varieties of Wine showing a rather better understanding of the target audience

NurseJennyLee · 13/03/2012 09:50

You only have to look at certain threads harrumphing and moaning on about getting Mother's Day gifts to see the target audience for this tat.

Mother's Day to me has always been associated with daffodils, I used to make my mam's cards right into my teens (love art and crafts).

YANBU. I walked into the supermarket and assumed it was a load of Valentines day leftovers that they were going to sell off cheap, not full price tat for Mothering Sunday.

I always called my mother 'Mother'. My sister called her 'Mummy' until she (DS) was 60.

Marymaryalittlecontrary · 13/03/2012 10:09

I like pink personally, but agree that shouldn't be the only colour available.

My gripe is how twee and gushing all the cards are! Was in the card factory at the weekend and it was so hard to find a card without some mushy love type poem inside. My mum and I are not sentimental in that way. I really wanted one that just said 'With lots of love on Mother's Day' or something like that, but there was virtually nothing!

And loads of the cards featured handbags or shoes. An unnatural proportion it seemed to me. My mum is 67 and while she uses a handbag and wears shoes, they are not the sort of thing she would want to see on a card!

The retailers think all consumers are idiots, on the whole, we fall for it

ShowOfHands · 13/03/2012 10:17

I'm mama too.

The pink tat is aimed at the pester power of the child buying said items.

I am pretending the hot pink, fur embellished rubber gloves are ironic. I feel less punchy that way.

TroublesomeEx · 13/03/2012 11:45

YANBU.

I have made it quite clear that I don't want a pink heart shaped casserole dish/roaster Hmm

Archemedes · 13/03/2012 11:49

Whats wrong with pink?

don't like don't buy it.

I'm sure in place like m& s and bigger shops theres a bigger variety

morrisons is very pink atm.

Mrsjay · 13/03/2012 11:55

and glitter why is there so much glitter on cards you cant lift and look at a card without bloody glitter all over you , sigh

SunSoakedStone · 13/03/2012 12:00

Make your own! I've made a black and leopardskin one and it took all of 2 minutes...

sassymcnassy · 13/03/2012 14:00

There is nothing wrong with pink. The point, quite clearly, is when there is little alternative to the ubiquitous pink, and the idea that we are all one homegenous pink loving, glittery, teddy bear, flowers and chocolate, shoe and handbag mass to be shoved tat at. Hmm

NiniLegsInTheAir · 13/03/2012 14:05

I can't STAND pink and neither can my Mum - I managed to find her a nice yellow Mothering day card after much searching.

The real problem that perpetuates this vomit-inducing pinkness seems to come from men - I know come sunday my hubby will have got me a bright pink card and some bright pink present on 'behalf' of our 1 yr old, just like last year.

NotMostPeople · 13/03/2012 14:07

I've just stood for ages trying to buy one in Sainsburys, firstly my mother wouldn't want a fluffy pink one and secondly I don't have a great relationship with her anyway. Every year I try to find one that doesn't say 'best Mum' - because she isn't or 'I love you' because this isn't something we've ever said to each other. She would be upset if I didn't send one though, so it's tricky.

Kitchentiles · 13/03/2012 14:10

What makes me particularly want to vomit is the shade of pink. I can handle cerise but that pastel, soft, baby pink........puke....
