To be angry over this email?

I have just received an email from my son's school, with every single child's name at the school and every parents email address.

I don't want other parents having my email address, aibu to be annoyed over this?

Ahaah. See? Be paranoid. Constantly. It's the only way Shock

QuintessentialyHollow · 13/03/2012 23:56

Ahem.
When you click message recall in Outlook, it does not actually recall the message. It sends an additional email to the recipient where the content is copied in, but the subject line says "Message Recalled" instead of the original heading.

Just so you know...

LineRunner · 13/03/2012 23:58

Actually it ('recalling') is a way of pointing out that you just really messed up.

Pusheed · 14/03/2012 02:12

Because the more people who have your details the more spam you get

Why do you think that letting other parents have your email address will lead to more spam?

Stealing your email address isn't really cost effective for spammers. Typically a spammer will have software that will generate literally millions of address combinations eg billsmith1, billsmith2 etc etc. They then blanket these addresses with whatever junk they are peddling.

tallwivglasses · 14/03/2012 08:53

Pusheed, I have several email addresses. The most active one gets the most invitations for penis extensions, offers of euro-millions, etc. Also I have an unusual name (I'm pretty sure it's unique actually) so it's unlikely it's generated. Dunno, maybe I'm wrong.

Pusheed · 14/03/2012 09:17

tall -I get very little spam on my main account but when I do I sometimes about 50 variations on my address on the CC line. That plus I only give the address to friends, family and business associates suggest to me the addresses are generated but I might be wrong.

I've been told that a typical spam letter gets sent to millions. I find it hard to believe that there is some spammer out there patiently hacking people in order to gather a million plus email addresses for his spam.

lottiegb · 14/03/2012 11:03

There's spam, which will be generated by the million but may also be harvested from high-traffic sites.

Then there is people selling mailing lists. That's how Kate Middleton's parents made their money, not from selling party items but from selling the addresses of people they'd sold them to. Maybe unlikely any of the school parents are in this business but it is a potentially useful mailing list for a local business.

Then there's just people you mightn't want contacting you directly having your address.

Has the school apologised and dealt with it jinglymum? It is a real faux pas (and, boringly, technically illegal under the Data Protection Act) and I'd be much more worried if they don't understand that than at a one off mistake.

ChaoticAngel · 14/03/2012 11:46

YANBU I wouldn't want my email addy being sent to all and sundry either. If I want someone to have my email addy then I'll give it to them.

Scholes34 · 14/03/2012 13:29

It will just be a mistake, which the school will, in time, apologise for. My DCs' secondary school did this not so long ago. I found it quite useful!
